Americans, questions about 4th of July

When the 4th of July falls on a Sunday like this year, do stores close that day?

Do people that normally have a Sunday off, get the Monday off?

Most of us here are retired, but this could matter if your family were travelling to visit.

Stores close? Nope, at least in most of the U.S. (Maybe liquor stores in the South, if I recall correctly.)

As to getting the Monday off, I suspect it would depend on businesses/offices.

In general, if the 4th falls on Saturday, we get Friday off, and if it falls on Sunday, we get Monday off. Otherwise, just the 4th itself. No, stores don't close for most holidays. Maybe Christmas and Thanksgiving and New Years.

Thanks for the replies. Certainly hope a good number of people manage to get the day off.

If I’m in the US on the 4th, I search out a parade and whatever events are going on. They’re always good, no matter the size of the community. I‘d hate to miss out on these for work.

I worked at a local hospital 3 days/wk M,W,Fri,if any holiday fell on a Sun,I would have to come to work on Monday
There will be no mail delivery on Mon July 5th where I live, most of the stores I know will be open as usual on Mon

This year, it's a Federal Holiday on the 5th.
Things closed on Federal Holidays are government offices - like the Post Office and Banks.
Everything else can stay open, and usually do.
In the uk on a holiday where the govt offices close, we call that a Bank Holiday :D we have 8 Bank holidays per year in the UK

These are our 10 holidays this year, plus the newly added Juneteenth on the 19th of June.

Notes

[1] July 4, 2021 (the legal public holiday for Independence Day), falls on a Sunday. For most Federal employees, Monday, July 5, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes.
[2] December 25, 2021 (the legal public holiday for Christmas Day), falls on a Saturday. For most Federal employees, Friday, December 24, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes.

There are company employees, like UPS delivery drivers, that have contracts which give them a legal holiday like Government Workers.
I believe that is still the case, but not positive about it anymore ... times keep changing the rules. :)

Our Christmas BH includes 10 -14 days holiday for most people and takes us right over New Year

Our Easter BH lasts for 2 weeks also... and at the beginning and end of May we have BH's where the children get a week off school too

Aside from those we have another 6 Bank holidays...

This thread reminds me of the Holiday/Sunday Blue Laws that were in effect when I was growing up.

Almost nothing was open on Holidays and Sundays so it required some advance planning.

No ATMs or credit cards so you had to make sure that you got to the bank after work on Friday.

Very few stores were allowed to be open and the sale of alcohol was prohibited.

It wasn't any better or worse than today just different.

same here.... and also most of our local shops had half day closing on one day during the week.

All our shops including petrol stations sell alcohol....years ago petrol stations didn't sell anything but fuel, and small accessories needed for your vehicle..like oil, or chamois leathers etc.... now they're mini supermarkets.

However our Petrol stations shops all close to the public at aroun 11pm.. so no-one can enter the shop after then, and customers have to pay at a bullet proof pop up window in the forecourt..which is fine by me, and safer for the lone checkout assistant working there late at night

With 83 toilets and a cleaning crew that works around the clock, this isn't just hype.

“You can build it out of gold,” founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin told local dignitaries gathered for the award ceremony, “but if you don't clean it, at the end of the day, you end up with dirty gold.”

Sorry for the off topic..The above answers your question pretty much..

I can remember the old “Blue Laws” from when I was a kid in the States, too. They would literally rope off things that you were forbidden to buy on Sundays in department stores, like clothing. Today you can buy almost anything in stores on Sundays, although places like car dealerships and other businesses are closed. Holidays especially if they fall during the work week see hyping for special sales and promotions, with Xmas the one exception...

The only time I've seen roping off of certain items in stores has been during this pandemic.. in Supermarkets they'd rope off the clothing areas, and hardware...
yes here is the same, buy almost anything on Sundays.. many people would like to see the return of Sunday closing, especially now we can buy so much online...

In the USA do you have a law which regulates the opening times of your stores on Sundays ?

Our supermarkets even if they're open 24 hours a day 6 days a week...are only permitted to open a max of 6 hours per day on Sundays..They can choose between 10am and 4pm or 11am and 5pm...smaller grocery stores can stay open from 7am till 11pm..( exactly like the old 7-11's)

It depends on the state.
Also the store, within state laws.
