Wiki: The United States of America (U.S.A. or USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America.

I refer to the United States of America as USofA.

Is there a problem or issue with me referring to it as the USofA?

If so, please show me where it states that I am wrong in referring to the United States of America as the USofA.

Additionally, please show me where it states that I am being insulting or funny in referring to the United States of America as the USofA.
Interesting..I can't imagine there would be a problem with using USofA but I have never seen anyone write it that way..I have heard people say 'the good ole USA'
Good grief I can't think of any reason that would be interpreted as funny, much less insulting :oops:
 

I just don't understand it, Aneeda, I can say it one way, and someone will come along and tell me I'm slighting your country, if I say it another way, someone else will come along and present the suggestion to me, why can't you call it this, Aunt Marg?

If I refer to it another way, sure enough someone else will happen along and tell me that I'm being rude, condescending, and insulting, and if I seek to use another term someone else will come stumbling along and accuse me outright as to slandering your country.

I've had more than enough of it anyway.
Well, you are not slandering my country. I am a Vietnam era veteran and my husband is a Vietnam disabled combat veteran and I feel I have the right to decide if someone has insulted my country or not. YOU HAVE NOT.

On the other hand, look at the responses idea vs ideal, 😂, I could care less. Lots of times, as we all know, the computer automatically changes what you wrote/write to a different word and yet people get anal over it as if they are the grammar police. Lots of times my n does not work so there is a blank space a d. Silliness.

Just let it go @Aunt Marg there’s plenty of other things for the haters to hate on 😂😂😂 like my grammar apparently

It's usual for that particular user to use "ideal" in place of "idea"; in fact, that user never does use "idea", so it does not appear to be a typo or keyboard issue.

I call it courtesy to explain it. But whatever. Go ahead with your name calling.
 
Why don't you please let it go, @AuntMarg. Let's try our best to just get along without being petty as some see this topic. I simply reply I'm from the great state of Texas. I'm proud to be a 4th generation American.

Let it go.... I hate to see our members leave because of this.

I was not referring to you @Devi but someone else who first brought the subject up. But you are probably right as I don’t track my word usage. The thing is I could not care less about grammar or punctuation as the grammar police are not going to arrest me.

I do not dust very often as the housekeeping police have never arrested me either, and I rarely cook 😂. In other words, I do not sweat the small stuff. But I will say, I don’t understand why people do.
 
We are a country without a unique name. There are other United States, like Mexico (official name Estados Unidos Mexicanos), and everyone from Canada to Argentina and Chili live in America. So technically there are other united states in America. I suppose Canada is one of those, or united provinces anyway. As a result we get called a lot of different things, sometimes I just say "the states", no better though.

For the past year? This thread was started May 23, 2021.

Why shouldn't it be brought up when I'm on the receiving end of being ridiculed over the term I choose to refer to your country? A term that a majority of respondents to this thread topic clearly stating they had no issue with?

Time to resurrect this thread for a few who persist in their quest to correct Aunt Marg, over using a term that doesn't (personally) suit them or agree with them.

So this morning I used the term... United States of North America, and was called on it by a member.

I gather this whole name-game has turned into a sort of poking match for a few here, a few who cannot accept the fact that there is no set term for the United States of North America, and when someone (anyone) uses a term outside that of their liking, it awakens the pettiness in them and the sniveling starts.

For any others wishing to call me on using the term, United States of North America, kindly refrain, as this thread represents the overwhelming support I received in referring to America as either the USofA or the United States of North America.
The person who called you on your usage is out of line. We are officially the United States of North America. Let them look it up.

She brought it up since she was criticized for her usage and wanted opinions as to what was correct or insulting. Simple deduction.

Let's just say The United States of Amerigo Vespucci.

Or the Contiguous United States
Or the Conterminous United States.
 
I think I had a shot at expressing my views on the thread topic a while back, BUT, (there's always a but!), even as someone likely to take up cudjels in any discussion where I believe I'm being crossed, (such as whenever I cast dispersions on the way the term "equality" is put forward as a panacea in the modern world), I find myself now an almost complete agnostic, if that's the right word, on this subject or argument.

Whenever I hear your country referred to, or by whatever term, and I agree there are one or two, it is of almost complete indifference to me which one is used, and I don't think I often get in any way confused which ever one is used.

At the same time I accept "these days" there are many things folks either are offended about, or choose to say they're offended about, and I can't always understand whether it a genuine concern for them or not, so its necessary to be a bit cautious sometimes.
