Got me a new walker today

I broke down and got a walker today. My balance sucks, especially on uneven surfaces. So, I got it. I like it. It has a seat, and folds up easily to put into the car.
Because I am heavy, I got the Heavy Duty, wide frame one. Here is the thing. I got a doctors order, for insurance. The lady at the Medical supply store gave me some interesting news My insurance (Medicare) will NOT cover this one. Why? Because I am mot heavy enough!!! Never been told that before. If I was over 400 pounds, it would cover it. I am no where near that. But the walker was only just over $200, so not bad.

@Marie5656 I had a problem with a walker I got for my mom through Medicare a few years back. I went to pick it up and the walker was blue. A month or two later I got a bill saying they wouldn't pay because it was blue and not silver.
My mom didn't care what color it was and told me to exchange it for a silver one, which I did. Then they paid.
Maybe you should have put a few sacks of flour under your dress and get reweighed. lol
 
I have my own version of a walker that I use daily ... (and so much better than the cane I was using)

For anyone walking a dog daily, and needing the support of a walker too.
It's a dog jogger that doubles as a walker for me.... large, enclosed bed for my older dog, who sometimes just likes to ride when it's hot.

It has large over-sized tires for all terrain and we both benefit from it..
It supports me well, even if my dog gets excited over something while walking. I use a 12' retractable leash for him to walk along side the jogger.
No worries about losing my balance and falling ever. It's great. I take the handle and keep it bent all the way in the forward position over the stroller bed.

While I was still working for the government as a taxpayer, after landing in Denver, I was walking up the jetway and tripped over a divider and down I went with pain. Although I didnā€™t know it at the time it happened, I broke a bone in my ankle and had to have it pinned. For the next three weeks I used a walker to get around. I actually found it to be a plus. Cars stopped for me, people offered to help me at the store, bank and post office. It was interesting to learn how caring some people can be.

On the downside, some of my friends sure had fun with making jokes and wisecracks. All in good fun, I suppose.
 
Marie, I'm glad you made the decision to get something that is surely helpful, in multiple ways. :)

The wide one seems much more stable to me, so it's safer as it wouldn't tip, I think. Also, more comfortable. Good decision to get the one that's best for your use. :)

It will last a long time, also! So it's money well spent.

And btw, can you list that sort of durable medical supply, with your doctor letter attached, to submit with your next review for your apartment? Many or most, do allow you to list things like that, so it's worth asking, and saving your doctor letter for that.

I like it!

The seat can do double duty hauling the laundry basket, packages, etc...

It's too bad that Medicare wouldn't pay a prorated portion of the cost. It's really in their best interest to keep you from falling and submitting a huge emergency room or hospital bill.

That's right. I forgot, that when I got some mobility aids, years ago,
for the very first time, people stopped and opened very heavy doors for me, held them open and waited their turn, and even offered to reach something, or to bring me an item.
I hadn't experienced that before, and it was done politely and kindly. And it was an actual help for me.

I found the same thing when I had to walk using my cane. People would help with doors etc. It was a big help and I did not expect it as you figure out how to do things for yourself when you have to.
