This is an Aussie initiative, but could surely work anywhere.

The letterbox project is Connected AU’s flagship offering that coordinates the delivery of handwritten letters from the wider community to people experiencing isolation and loneliness. https://connectedau.com.au/letterbox-project

I’ve had a quick read @mellowyellow

However it’s a bit in the expensive side if you want to join the hobby group ( gardening /cooking/ book ect ) $15 a MONTH 🙁🙁

Not sure if you have to pay a fee to receive or write letters :unsure:as it states ALL correspondence
is monitored / checked by the staff before being forwarded into the recipient

Oh no, here I was thinking it was a brilliant idea, I could see an elder living alone or someone in a nursing home being delighted by a personal letter but didn't investigate further. It's been ages since I had a personal letter and miss it a lot. Sorry if it's a bum steer.

It’s fine @mellowyellow no one wants to read all the info on a site that looks good it would take forever .

Unlike pen pal programs, Connected AU manages the Letter Box project to ensure the safety and security of all participants. We follow strict privacy policies and procedures. No personal, identifiable information IS EVER SHARED and each letter is APPROVED by our team before being sent to the recipient.

Yes, it sure is more work this way. But we know it makes a safer, stronger program for everyone involved.

It's a sign of the times, even hand written letters have to be checked so that the vulnerable are protected from scammers.

A while back, it was reported in the British press that our postal service, Royal Mail, are considering mail collection on a Monday to Friday basis only. Saturday collections would become history, so far it hasn't happened. For mellowyellow here's the story, hand written, now you have a had a hand written letter.

The letter underlines my ignorance of technology. Had I been fifty years younger, I would have placed the letter in my printer/copier, scanned it, uploading it to the computer. The reason it's so shadowy is because the only way that I can post it is to photograph it with my phone. There again, if I was fifty years younger, I too probably wouldn't know one end of a fountain pen from the other.

I got one earlier in the week mellowyellow, but it was
typewritten, the bonus was the cheque attached at the
bottom!

Pity that the figures in the letter were different from the
cheque, Insurance companies will try anything to save
money.

Mike.

While y'all going back and forth.about cost and the idea of someone screening everything I'm sitting here thinking more power to any of you still able to write longhand letters without arthritis in hands being an issue. When i was young i carried on a vigorous long hand correspondence for almost two decades with various family and friends. Could not today

In the past I also used to exchange letters with pals. However, I preferred to use a typewriter for my writings. Had 2 typewriters over the years but both broke down. One day I ordered a new one online but the d@mn thing was defective and I had to return it. Somehow, I never got around to buying a new one. Oh well, mebbe some day ...

Meanwhile I exchange emails.
