What Would You Do If You Were Suddenly Rich?

Find a place to make a family compound that's drought- and heat-resistant that we can basically circle the drain in a little more comfortably. Waste of time even daydreaming about it, though; Huzz would never leave here for any reason.
 

If I suddenly became rich, one of the 1st things I'd do is to donate a large sum to Smile Train.
Smile train is the world's largest cleft lip/cleft pallet team of doctors who go around the world and operate on poor children, all free to the families.
I recently watched a show about Smile Train and how they change lives with their surgery. They showed before and after videos and the mothers were often overcome with emotion. crying with happiness. Quite a moving documentary.
 
I've never had much excess monies to buy things I'd like to have, always bought what i could afford. It would be nice to have
money enough to splurge a little bit. But from what I've seen of people who came into money, it created problems for them and
their families, many to the ruination of their own lives. So, no, I'd like to keep on, keeping on as I do and have been doing. I don't need money problems. At my age I'm happy and would like to keep it that way.

@senior chef This is the first I've heard of Smile Train. What a nice thing for those children who need it. I'm sure their lives are changed big time.
@fuzzybuddy I've always felt a bit of affinity with Egypt too. Coincidentally, I went clubbing with a friend who lived in D.C. The club was frequented by Africans. I was dancing with one of them who asked me if I was from Egypt...said I looked Egyptian. I don't think it was a line because he wasn't coming at me like that.

The culture of Egypt has always fascinated me; in ancient times, some Egyptian women were allowed to own property and businesses--maybe just the rich ones, but still, that was very progressive for those days.
 
I am a widow, so money would be mine. I would continue being very generous with daughters and grandchildren. i got a big insurance payout when my husband died and inherited a good amount from parents. Gave daughters good cash amounts, cars to grandchildren, paid a few semesters of college and other items needed.

I donā€™t want to leave big bucks when I die. I want to see them enjoy it while I am alive. In my will, what is left will be split between two daughters.
 
We don't live in a rich area...Just people go to work and get their children to school....
My hubby and I are old....We sent our too kids to college....I worked and so did my husband...
We live here for 45 years....We did live in another town and another state....
Hubby had a truck to take him and the people in our area to New York City to work...
We didn't have much down here years ago, so hubby had to drive more then an hour.
I did get a job in the school....I worked there for 25 years as a Secretary....
..We love our home, but we are maybe moving to another state...
Our kids are sad, but they can take a plane and come down......
Their kids are all grown up....
 
It depends if it was just 1 million we would give our son most of it, keep a small amount just in case. 5 million and we would give a close friend one million, then we would pay off another friends house, it seems a huge amount to them probably around 50 K, they can't be trusted with money unfortunately. The rest would go to our son. We would probably keep a small sum,our home is paid off, our car is also paid off so we have just the normal bills each month.

Think he would notice if you built a new house around him while he napped or something? Don't even disturb that section of the floor, just make sure the new kitchen and bathroom are in approximately the same locations.

Probably not; his detached garage/shop and the land--too much land, IMO--this place is sitting on mean more to him than the actual house itself. Me, I like our house okay (altho I think we'd be okay in a slightly smaller one) but I'd like to move it to a different neighborhood. And heck, while we're dreaming, I'd like to move it to a different part of the state but in addition to him never agreeing to that we got family stuff here we shouldn't leave.

Officer...The Holy Quran has verses stating that Allah (God) gave women the right to own property, inherit property, own businesses, participate in politics and get divorces. The contents of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) more than 1400 years ago. When I took a Women's Studies course in college less than 4 decades ago, our professor told us that at that time there were still states in this country that did not allow women to inherit property!

That's right; in some U.S states, some recently divorced or widowed women still have problems establishing credit if everything was in the husband's name.

Exactly and that's why I've "preached" that women should have their own bank accounts and establish their own credit ratings separate from their husband's. And of course you know I advocate for them learning everything about the family finances. I know women who didn't bother to do it and their lives changed drastically for the worse after they lost their husbands.
 
I would split it equally between my 4 children and myself. I'm concerned about the disappearing middle-class for future generations, as the country deteriorates in many ways. I would require that they use part of it to be trained to manage their wealth properly. And part for life skills in a world where wolves in sheeps clothing must be recognized and avoided.

Half of my portion would be for helping young widows with children who were not left enough life insurance...and for widows who were left enough but are lost and frightened. I don't know of any organizations like that...specifically for widows.

The other half of my portion I'd use to live independently and comfortably so as not to burden my children. And enjoy some things I've put on the back burner in order to raise my family.

A private jet.....A villa in Greece .....and get carers for my husband and a chef, and run away .....šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ with my husband as well......lol
 
How much makes a person rich? Itā€™s no longer a million dollars. Many seniors have at least that much. If I had to guess, I would say at least ten million dollars.
 
I don't need much so I'm probably rich enough. Health is more important. My neighbor on one side retired with a bundle; had a stroke and barely gets around. My former neighbor on the other side hit the lottery and built that house. Her husband died and she lost her marbles and ended up having the house sold and she disappeared.

I'd hire a secretary to type my posts on here.
I'd hire a brilliant chef to cook my dinner.
I'd have a chauffer to drive me wherever my fancy takes me.
I'd have all my clothes professionally cleaned and ironed.
I'd hire a barber to trim my curly locks and give me a shave each morning.
I'd hire someone to press the remote buttons for me.

Second thoughts, I'll stay poor, I don't want to get married. :)

I like your thinking! That is what my mother did with us, not a lot of money, but she gave it away while she still could. Somehow felt a lot better than getting it after she died. And I think most people need and appreciate money more in their youth, but most don't inherit until old age...
