Why do people spread misinformation?

Every day, the floodgates of lies open up about everything under the sun, including covid-19 related scientific information. People claim to not trust any news outlets, but somehow, they still have strong opinions about everything. Of course, they never divulge their "trusted" sources out of fear of being ridiculed. They believe they have secret information that the "deep state" wants suppressed so they can "control" us.

So why spread misinformation? How do the disseminators benefit? We rarely do anything that doesn't benefit us in some way.

I was watching the news last night about the attack at the Kabul airport and wondering the same thing about the terrorists who blew themselves up along with over 100 people including 13 U.S. service personnel.

Today, I read an article claiming that ISIS-K seeks to sow chaos and disorder throughout the world. They do it with bombs and guns — often sacrificing their own lives in the process.

In the U.S., perhaps certain groups also seek to sow chaos and disorder, but through misinformation and reckless behavior including refusal to get vaccinated or wear PPE, and are doing what they can to prevent others from taking actions that could help get the pandemic under control. Many of them, it seems, are also willing to sacrifice their own lives and the lives of others for their cause. Every day, we see stories about church leaders, policemen, politicians, and others, who preached to their followers that the pandemic is a hoax and that the vaccine is dangerous, have died from covid-19. Many regret not getting vaccinated.

Personally, I don't feel loyal to any groups, and there's no way I'd sacrifice my life for any ideology. Perhaps if I felt a strong connection to a group, I would. I don't know.

I have no idea why people spread misinformation, maybe to make themselves look important with their finger on the pulse, maybe it's something else.
On a personal level, I research everything and very rarely give my opinion on things.
The world is going to hell in a hen basket, it always amazes me that in an era where information is easily obtained through research so many people like sheep follow misinformation.

Believing in fake news could be related to a person's level of delusionality, dogmatism, religious fundamentalism, or lousy bullsh*t radar.

Arrogance and overconfidence stop people from slowing down and engaging in rational reasoning. They may have insufficient or inaccurate prior knowledge.

Fake news is usually emotionally evocative, geared toward provoking shock, fear, anger.

$$$ Sensationalism sells. Money under the table affects our democracy.

The greedy rich want power and control. Look at William Randolph Hearst who bought out the Washington Post because he wanted to get his choice of President...which worked and he got what he wanted...not at all what the voters wanted. It's an historical fact.

"Believe it or not" there are large numbers of unpatriotic millionaires and billionaires, and there are the rich who want all the power around the world and want to destroy America....and they are rich in oil, rich in trade, rich in investments...and the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The rich have a voice because money speaks. The poor are silenced.

Check out who really owns the mainstream media. It's not the poor or middle class. We aren't controlling it.

Sorry to sound so grim. I'll go back now to my Dots & Spots thread now 🤪

If we're talking about individuals, I think they are in general paranoid and to some degree anti-social. They have no trust of anything that governing forces or big business has a hand in. Most, I expect, are pretty much shut-ins because they're uncomfortable interacting with others and trust no one. They thrive on the misinformation that abounds on the internet and quickly develop a series of 'questionable' sources that feeds their mistrust and paranoia on any given subject. It's a vicious cycle that propels them deeper and deeper into their own twisted world over time. There's no rationalizing with them. It's fruitless!

When one starts out believing in imaginary friends the rest is easy.
It seems like some people lead lives completely rooted in lies, from religion to their politics. It's all lies, or at least not rooted in reality. Is that because they can't handle reality or are they inherently dishonest? I don't get it. How can people live like that?

They live fine. They're just not you. People may think in herds, but each herd is different from the other.

"a lie will travel around the world, while the truth is lacing up its boots." Mark Twain
And here is the perfect example of how people take something they read or hear without questioning its veracity before repeating it.

I'm always suspicious of any saying attributed to Mark Twain (or Confucius, Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde and other familiar names) because a lot of them are bogus. Either completely made up or wrongly attributed.

In the case of the quote about a lie travelling around the world... it is by no means certain that Twain ever wrote it in any of his literary works.

OK, maybe the book of quotes is wrong about this....then I said it and it is true. I am on the twsp. board and something was said just two months ago and the whole twsp. is up in arms over something that was miss quoted and flat out untrue. phone calls, letters to the editor the works, all over something taken out of context. the meetings are usually around 20 people last month standing room only, when the truth was reposted all anyone could say was ...."OH"

For the media owners and politicians it's money and power just because there's a viable market consisting of people who are ready to believe anything they say.

Then there are those who are paid to spread lies. They may or may not believe what they're saying. A couple of influencers came forward and revealed they've been approached by an agency offering them money to say vaccines are bad without providing evidence.

For the average sharers, i think they really believe the information they're sharing. And because they "discovered" something new (fake news) that debunks what everyone believes, they feel intelligent.

I've been amazed at the amount of misinformation regarding this virus, and the vaccines....and the number of people who believe this nonsense. It appears that a sizeable portion of the population thinks this virus is some sort of conspiracy, and the vaccines are a poison. I can't understand their thought processes....IF they can even think. Sure the vaccines aren't 100% effective, or safe for everyone, but virtually All of the evidence from multiple reputable sources shows that getting vaccinated is the best way to avoid getting ill, or dying.

I guess they think that their "rights" are more important than the safety of the general population, and it seems to take their laying in an ICU before they consider changing their minds. In the process, they are driving our hospitals and medical personnel to the brink, and making it very hard, or almost impossible, for others with serious medical conditions to get the treatment they need.

IMO America is the home of conspiracy theories. I consider it to be the modern form of superstition.
Instead of the Devil being responsible for all human woes it is now the government.

My Irish background grandmother was very superstitious but none of her children were.
Hopefully this addiction to CTs will die out over time.

Here's another misinformation/conspiracy theory casualty...

The founder of the San Angelo Freedom Defenders, a group “to educate and empower citizens to make informed choices concerning local, statewide, and national policy and to encourage them to actively participate in their duty to secure God-given and constitutionally protected rights,” has died of covid-19. He claimed to be sick of the "government controlling our lives" and it killed him, although it wasn't the government that killed him; it was the coronavirus.

He leaves behind three children and his wife is pregnant with their forth. Taxpayers will probably wind up supporting them.
