That is because they are formed over warmer ocean water now and grow extremely big before they hit the continent. They contain more energy than before.Everything weather-wise is so extreme anymore ... Hurricanes used to lose their steam when they started traveling across land - doesn't seem to apply these days.
And....Hurricane season is far from over. There are more forming in the Atlantic that could pose threats to the Gulf and East coasts.

Early in the season to be so far though the alphabet, Sept 16 is normally the mid-point. We may pass Z this year.

I hope she emptied her refrigerator before she went to Baton Rouge ?My Aunt just got power back to her house in Houma, but the neighborhood is still a mess so she has not tried to move back in. Still staying with her son in Baton Rouge. Most power is back, but not all. Things are recovering.
