Inside the eyelids

I am curious. When it is completely dark in the room and your eyes are closed what do you see? I do not mean think. I mean see.

Inside the eyelids

Often enough I see Sophia Loren dancing the dance of the seven veils, sensuously coming closer and closer, taunting me, and just as I'm about to kiss her, I open my eyes and she's gone. :(
I'll have to try keeping my eyes shut, then maybe I'll have more news for you. :)

I see swirling colors. Very relaxing. Helps me fall asleep.
Sounds a bit trippy to me!

I see shades of black and grey.

I have discussed this with quite a few people. Some see them some do not. Some I am sure do not admit it and some do not know what the heck I am talking about. It is kind of crazy but it is a real phenomenon.

That is a very clever question :)
They are called closed-eye hallucinations related to a scientific process called phosphenes. It happens because of constant activity between neurons in the brain and your vision.

Some people (like me) see pictures of scenery and places and I enjoy it. If you do also, be careful not to let it go on too long because if you are a very intuitive person, you may see something that scares you.

In a pitch black room i see the same thing i see behind closed eyelids, it's natural, some people don't pay it any mind, some enjoy it, some move on to fantasizing. Don't know if anyone's done the research but i suspect that people who genuinely don't see phosphenes, rather than just never paid much attention to them, when eyes closed are not highly visual people as it is, which is why they don't pay attention.

i know we have a couple of SF members who have some degree of aphantasia, the inability to visualize mentally. i'm wondering if they see phosphenes. i would think so because phosphenes have been called a natural physiological phenomenon which is different from 'imagining'.

Here's a fairly good article about it that even tells you when seeing lights/colors not really there should send you to your eye doctor.

Wow, I just tried the method for possibly seeing phosphenes (closing my eyes tight and pressing on both eyelids); never tried that before, and this time I did see something instead of the nothing when I've got my eyes just regularly closed: I saw a very black hole (not a perfect sphere, had ragged edges) surrounded by gray. Kinda cool to finally see something. (Still don't see anything when my eyes are just regularly closed, though.)

I have noticed that different moods, attitudes and health seem to bring on different colors. Royal Azure with a bit of purple is my happy/healthy color. I have looked and looked for a color that matches it just to put a name on it for descriptive purposes. I have gotten close but never found one that truly looks like the blueish purple color I see behind my eyelids. I can pull it up when needed and it seems to calm my soul. I believe it is somehow connected to the pineal gland.
