The world has gone crazy

Sometime it blows my mind how much money is paid for old paintings, old cars ,old furniture. Say some one pays $10,000 for an item that is only worth $100. There is $9,900 dollars tht do not exist it is just numbers. If it causes inflation where the value of the dollar goes down what use is it for people who are poor. To me it is confusing and my head starts spinning just thinking about it. I also have wondered if paying extreme amounts of money for items could also be used for money laundering for the criminal element.

Well, remember The Pet Rock?
The Cabbage Patch Doll?
I can remember when the Cabbage Patch Doll was first mass-produced. I thought they were ugly (and still do). But my father wanted one for his little girl, and was willing to pay up to $200 for it. He wanted me to help him find one. I was surprised to find out they were going for $200 and up in my city.

The Pet Rock craze caused to me to think "why didn't I think of that"!

I am not willing to pay thousands of dollars for a painting. It's not a good use of money, IMO. Mostly, I just wish I had artistic talent so I could paint my own. My mother used to paint beautiful oil paintings. Three of my kids inherited her talent, but they are letting it go to waste now. Not that I want them to become professional artists, but it would be nice if they nurtured it.

I'm not really fond of modern art. I've only liked two modern art paintings. Basically, the art I like falls into the "I know it when I see it" category. It has to resonate with me, and I have to think it is beautiful. I don't know much about art. I like some of Albrecht Durer's animal paintings. I have a nice copy of "Young Hare", which is my favorite of all the art I own. He is the artist who painted "Praying Hands". My sister said my mother had a copy of that hanging in our house, but I don't remember that.

The world of art and it's value have always been a little on the north side of sanity, it seems to me.

This evening I was watching "Antiques Road Show on PBS.
A lady came in with a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat that was valued at $400,000 USD
Below is one of his paintings, but not the exact one I saw on TV.
Anyone who would pay even a dollar for one of his paintings is out of his freakin' mind.
$400,000 , the world has gone nuts.

Four hundred grand? Peanuts!

'My Bed' was sold at a Christie's auction in London for around $3.77 million. The "work" consists of dirty sheets, underpants stained by menses, used condoms, empty liquor bottles, and pregnancy tests.

With all the projected Christmas toy shortages this year, bet they will be dragging back out the Chatty Cathy's and pet rocks from the attic to wrap up for gifting.
I loved my Chatty Cathy. My mother sewed an entire wardrobe for her. I can just get a pet rock from yard to give to the kids I know -- I bet they'd be flabbergasted.

I remember the Beanie Baby craze in the 1990's. Watching people pay stupid prices for those things and then watching the bottom drop out until you could not give them away. Many things only value is what foolish people will pay.
