Live and let live

Title. How do you feel about this. it's something we don't do much anymore as we are always striving, it seems, to make everyone conform to our way of thinking. I'd give "live & let live" a chance again, just to see what happens. 😊

It would be nice if we could all mind our own business and peacefully coexist. These days it seems to be all about what each individual wants with little thought or concern over how it impacts others.1635265780089.jpeg

Kids are like that though Bea. I mean adults getting along and accepting each others' differences. We used to be more like this.

I can accept a person’s differences but there needs to be a degree of empathy and compromise beyond the simple notion of live and let live.

It’s hard to live and let live when the neighbors are blasting their music at 3:00am.

We are really great at categorizing other humans as friends, or foes in milliseconds. It doesn't take much to put you in the "foe' class.- the wrong hair color, skin color, time of day, wrong deodorant, anything. The problem is learning to tolerate each other., People are selfish, egotistical, stupid, quirky, overtly emotional, inane, and generally, a pain to live next to. Yes, there are limits to "live and let live", but most issues are minor irritations, that we allow to fester. That's when we turn a neighbor into a "foe".

I can agree with this. I don't expect anyone to have my point of view. I knew a woman years ago and we became work friends and went to a couple events. We were totally on the opposite political scale. We just never discussed politics.
see here in the UK..unless you're actively involved in a political party... no-one cares what political side you're on to be friends ( unless of course you're supporting some terrorist activity, that's different) .. we just don't discuss politics with our friends if we support different political parties, it just never comes up in conversation, we live and let live.. or at most there's some lighthearted ribbing occasionally at voting time .... it's absolutely no big deal in the UK... we differ very much from the US in this ..

That's really good to hear. In fairness, I think there are people in the U.S. who are fine this way. But then again you have the others who are not. I don't think it's age specific either. It varies.

I love you @hollydolly. 😊

We are at the edge of a very important time in our U.S. history. Some wags have even compared our situation to the build-up before the civil war.

Was the North supposed to let the South continue to enslave human beings? After all, Live & Let Live. That's a lot to overlook.

I know what you mean, chic. My best friend is totally opposite from me politically & religiously. We don't talk about it, but sometimes she slips something in and sometimes I feel so disgusted about what I know to be her views that I wonder how I can carry on with this friendship although it began 50 years ago this January.

I would love for us to all calm down and take Holly's approach but our issues here now in the states are humongous and potentially life altering for many citizens.

It was easier when we could say "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful"; it's more "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful But I do ugly things."

I agree things are becoming toxic. I was thinking more of forcing health decisions upon others than politics but they have merged to be almost one and the same. In real life I find common ground with everyone. Which is really nice. I just remember a time in which people, not just in America but almost the world over, had much more compassion for one another and it led to a more peaceful life overall. Many miss those times.

And what times were those, chic? The times that never existed, those times one could only see while wearing rose-colored glasses? The good old days were generally only good for some. I'm sorry to say those times never really happened, except in the imaginary days combined with youthful exuberance.

When I was a kid and a teen people were not polarized like they are now.

In the US, the left is getting more "left" and the right is getting more "right." There are fewer and fewer people like me in the middle.

The left is jamming idiotic theories down our throats. Men bearing children? Really? "Whiteness" as a disease? Asking for voter ID is racist? (When EVERY European country insists upon voter ID). Nothing wrong with 200,000 people walking across the border every month, either.

Meanwhile the right continues to adore you-know-who and to pursue crazy Texas-type culture crusades. And yammer on about vaccines and freedom. And deny climate change.

Both sides ignore the $30 trillion national debt, which is like a tumor that will someday kill us.

We are heading for big trouble, and it may be sooner rather than later.

What do you mean "Men bearing children?" Do you mean when a female 'changes' to male but leaves her organs intact? Just guessing, but please clue me in.

Also, our debt. No one expects we will ever pay it, and who is going to make us do so?

There was a time, and I remember it well in the late 30s right through the 50s, people on opposite sides of the coin politically got along just fine. Each respected the other's philosophy and let it go at that. I think the build up to WWII and the war itself tamed most of the adults in those days. I entered adulthood in the early 50s and it was a great time. It seems things began changing with assassination of JFK. It seemed as if the soul of this country began to die as well. Of course that's only my perception. But, I simply do not argue with anyone over policy unless I feel morally offended. That's not too often.

Interest on the national debt is about $479 billion per year, and growing. It's now the fourth largest item in the budget, after Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, and defense. And that's at historically low rates. Eventually it will devour everything else.

About men bearing children, yes, you guessed what I mean. There is a concerted effort to create confusion about gender. It's part and parcel of all the other idiocies pushed at us. My pronouns remain the same, thank you.

Debt isn't a bad thing so long as you have the ability to pay for it. What the deficit will be is something that bears watching. At my age I don't think any of what is being done or not done will affect me. But looking into the future I don't feel confident that America will stay as the world leader.

As someone that came of age during the Counterculture Revolution, I still have many of those values and tend to ignore politics. It was then that there was a much stronger primary American culture that we young folks of that era rejected causing a deep division. That noted, I see the same kind of deep division behavior in those now at either political extreme. Useful read for understanding how different groups think:
