My favorite's always been the deep-fried cake donut, unglazed. But I also like crullers, either glazed or with a drizzle of icing, and chocolate iced bar donuts, too.

I don't like any type of filling. They never taste right to me. They're either too sweet, or they lack flavor.

But I'll take a nice, flaky cream-puff over a donut every time. The cream has to be super light and airy, though. I actually get angry when a bakery stuffs the puffs with a freakin' log of cream.

Like Murrmurr, I was always partial to plain cake doughnuts but I haven't had a doughnut in years.

During high school, there was a small doughnut shop beside the river that was owned by a Navy veteran. Our US Navy Reserve meetings would run well into the evening, around the time the owner started frying doughnuts for sale the next morning. On our way home, three of us would stop in and he's give each of us a free hot doughnut. Those have always been my standard for what the perfect doughnut should be. :D
