Australia came top in global survey

Australians are either the drunkest people in the world or the people most likely to be honest about how often they get drunk, according to the latest Global Drug Survey. The survey of 32,000 people in 22 countries found that while Australians drank alcohol around twice a week on average, they became drunk 27 times a year, more than people in any other country surveyed, Guardian reports. The survey defined drunk as "having drunk so much that your physical and mental faculties are impaired to the point where your balance/speech was affected" and "your conversation and behaviors were very obviously different to people who know you." The US is the fourth-drunkest country in the world, according to the survey, behind Denmark and Finland but just ahead of the UK.

Based on my travels, the UK will always be Numero Uno. But then I've never been to Russia. Come to think of it, I saw some amazing feats of alcohol consumption in some little towns in the north of the province of Quebec....

I forgot about Russia, was gonna say the Scots were the most drunken in the world. However, the more I learn about other cultures I realize that's it's the Earthlings that are most drunken in the Solar System.

Wodka is my go-to liquor, mixed with club soda and a tweest of lime...nice and clean! 🕉️ ☯️ 🙏💪
 
I have been to Russia 4 times and to Poland 8 times. I always smile at the memory of being asked if it was true that in Canada and USA people mix their drinks like in the movies. I said that yes, they do. The Russians and Poles drink their vodka straight and then chase it down with something else and then eat. My experience is that I could always drink more in those countries and almost never have a hang over. Here you drink that miserable coke and rum or vodka with orange juice and the next day you gotta wish you were dead! Stol Lat!

That is/has become an issue in more ways than one. I remember when these fruit coolers cameout along with flavored whisky many feel this increases consumption because it goes down easier being more 'tasty'. Alcoholic drinks should be savored not devoured. Also the bite should be there to remind people they are drinking alcohol and not kool aid although too many seem respond to big alcohol marketing.

Ok! I was in a local liquor store last week but I'm not saying I'm an expert on the subject; but have you seen all the colourful, lovely, tempting many coloured bottles on the shelf? They tell you to "drink responsively". I agree totally with the concept "if you drink don't drive; if you drive, don't drink." However, our government liquor board sure is working overtime by a massive advertising campaign to get as many people to drink as often as possible. It's all about taxes and the revenue they get from having a monopoly on selling the booze. Simple economics!

I spent a couple of weeks in Russia on business, met a lot of Russians. Based on that small sampling I have to believe they drink more than we do in the US. Vodka with most every meal. Saw an interview with a Russian airline pilot once. He was talking about the problem of drunk pilots in Russia. When asked if he ever drank and flew his answer was an adamantane NO! But then he went on to say that he did have a few vodkas, but that wasn't really drinking. Russians may define drinking differently than we do.

Have to agree with the Russians and Poles on this one, I prefer straight liquor to anything mixed. I sip slowly, get the best of the taste that way.

For many years now, Ireland has addressed the problem of alcoholism in their country. When I visited my companion and I met a young man who drove our taxi. We all became friendly and we asked him to go to a pub with us for a drink. He emphatically declined. He told us that he saw firsthand the results of alcoholism, the painful deaths of his grandparents. His fear was that someone might see him in the little town of Tralee at a pub and believe that he might have broken his written oath to not touch alcohol, ever. There have been campaigns throughout the years to ask the young people to sign an oath not to drink alcohol. Although this is taken very seriously, the stigma remains about the "drunken" Irish. In fact, the problem is still just as bad as ever because pubs and drinking are a major social aspect of life in Ireland.
A famous writer in Ireland, Brendon Behan, drank himself to death at the age of 40. This was and is not uncommon in Ireland. It is reported that at least 3 people a day die from the consequences of alcohol consumption in Ireland.
