What big event do you think will happen soon that most people aren’t expecting?

See that's a flaw in the question: it doesn't make clear "unexpected to whom". Some of us are observant and also are well aware that not only is nature full of surprises, but human behaviors span a broad range from abominable and vicious to constructive and compassionate. Therefore few things happen that truly surprise suprise us.

Things that might catch some off guard, are not unexpected to those with realistic perceptions of the world, who can concieve of both good and ill happenings.

The only BIG event that surprised me was the collapse of the Soviet Union. Coincidentally, it was thirty years ago Today! December 26, 1991. I never thought that would happen in my lifetime and I was really not expecting this.

Me! i'd been predicting that event since 70's. The College guys i knew who organized anti-war rallies were dismissive of the notion, which i had presented when they were trying to figure out how to counter 'Domino Theory' of the East/West power struggles of the day. i told them--"The USSR is having a tough time meeting internal needs of their people as it is. Every 'domino' they claim just further overextends them and will lead to collapse. Letting them do so is smarter than overextending our nation's resources."

But at that point in time, i was just some working class 'girl' who sounded as if college educated--but still to those guys who were all for "Women's Lib" when trying to bed someone--still a 'girl'. They didn't even consider the possibility because a female presented it.

I lived in West Berlin during the Cold War and I predicted the USSR would surpass the west in Democracy but I didn't predict when it would happen and I certainly did not foresee the event being heralded by the end of the Soviet Union.

I also spent many months in West Berlin, was it '71? Around then. I heard 'Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin all the time I remember, first time I heard it. When I went through Checkpoint Charlie to visit the East I remember all the Anti America being in Vietnam posters, and teasing from the guards. One day I was refused permission to leave the East after spending the day there with my boyfriend. They didn't detain him, but he had a British passport & they kept me for several hours. Not sure why, though I have my ideas as to why. The East was so slummy and I was glad, not because it was the East but because it was Germany. I had many friends there, my favorites were from the Sudan.

I have relatives in California so I don't want to see that happen. I have been through several earthquakes in Cal even the Landers which was a 7.3. I was living in the Palm Springs area. The floor rippled with waves. No cracked foundation which was a surprise. Lots of aftershocks some around 4 mag. There is a lot of liquefaction that happens when you live near the beach. I had a house there also near Venice Beach This means your house moves with the quake and if it is a wood frame it survives very well. Also, pretty much the same with desert dwelling. I feel assured that California will not crack off into the ocean. Some of the worst earthquakes though have been in San Francisco and surrounding area where I also lived.:oops::)

Don't worry, California is not a shelf, the really big quake can happen but California won't be falling into the ocean. I was born there and still have a bit of family left there.
 
I think that the James Web Thelescope that was launched on a rocket today will bring back amazing information. I think it will find planets that have life in them. My big prediction is that it will find other universes besides ours. That the big bang is still hapening and other universes are being born all very far away from us. Also a better understanding how the matter of the universes is reused over and over.

I don't see it. Most of us are still pretty rational and to be honest, lazy. Our lives are pretty good no matter how much we complain, not many are going to give that up. I could see some domestic terrorism from crazies on both sides, though.
