Historian Alfred McCoy Predicts the U.S. Empire is Collapsing as China’s Power Grows

I honestly don't know. The world has backed down on Hong Kong, so I guess there's no reason to think we'll defend Taiwan.
Hong Kong was leased or something like that and we all knew that would happen

Edited: I was right 😂. Hong Kong was leased to Great Britain in 1898 for 99 years. The lease was up, Britain gave it back, and, like any property, it was return to its rightful owner.

I think we will have Taiwan's back because of what's happened in Hong Kong.
"The world" backed off Hong Kong because the CCP had officially agreed to let it remain separate from mainland China - the Two Countries, One Nation policy - but the CCP reneged on that agreement almost immediately. The CCP also refers to Taiwan as "two countries, one nation" but Taiwan wants to be a separate, independent country and now everyone knows the "two countries, one nation" policy is pure BS.

I think Taiwan will go down, but I don't know if the U.S. will respond or not. Do you think we will?
So far, we are promising to protect Taiwan. Japan, Britain and Australia have also. The US and Britain already have ships and personnel there, and the US and Britain are helping to prepare Japan's and Australia's military forces. And surprisingly, the Philippines actually sunk a Chinese fishing fleet when it refused to leave their waters.

Taiwan was settled in 3000 BC, belonged to Japan in 1895, and then China, forgot 😂, then became independent. In any event, we have treaties with Taiwan so whole different situation than Hong Kong which was owed by China, leased to the British, and returned by the British to China when the lease was up.

Our goal right now is to prevent active military aggression from China toward Taiwan. Meanwhile, the US and China are very busy building up their military and ramping up their military technology, and I don't think we have any technology that China hasn't stolen or reverse-engineered. For the past 4 decades, we left ourselves totally open and vulnerable in that regard.

Yes, that's true, but China had formally agreed to never interfere with Hong Kong's democracy and policies, and they completely ignored that agreement.

🤦🏻‍♀️. Because we have been so successful in preventing active military aggression in the past by other countries. What we need to do is stay out of it until and if it comes under our treaty obligation. It is not our business.

If this historian is even close to being accurate then I have some grave concerns over human rights disappearing from humanity. All the views on this thread are very important because we still have influence on who we vote to represent us AND to our families and friends. I will following this subject closely and let my view of the "new world order" ( whatever that might be ) be as objective as I possibly can. In an increasing digital networked world, that is not going to be very easy. First and foremost we need to get our own house in order. I feel like the coming elections are going to be NUTS! I have no idea how we are going to accomplish this now. I feel like anything we do is like a crap shoot. Most people loose at this game, especially when playing against the house.

If we're depending on voters to save the U.S., we're screwed! :ROFLMAO:

Taiwan's fate will have a direct effect us and the rest of the democratic world. To protect democracy, it is crucial that we stop the CCP from taking over in the China sea and, inevitably, the South Pacific and so on. Or we could just kiss all forms of democracy goodbye. Personally, that isn't what I want for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

How do you propose we stop them? Democracy here at home isn't exactly stable. Just look at what happened exactly one year ago, today, and all those involved — some of whom serve in Congress, unencumbered. Actually, they seem empowered by trying to subvert democracy and refuse to cooperate with investigations.

And that is what is always said as we engage in war after war after war. We need to stop this endless cycle of the US being the policeman, savior of the world, champion of democracy crap. Cause it’s crap; and we are awful at it.

The US has its own very severe issues at this time. Our own democratic way of life is at risk. There is a pandemic, our major political parties can not agree on which TP to use to wipe the crap off their faces, there are several serious issue before the Court, schools are closing again, hospitals are over crowded and on and on and on.

Taiwan matters only in regards to our treaty and keeping our word as a nation. Otherwise, it does not matter. Doom and gloom, fear mongering, and the blah, blah, blah, does not matter. we do not need another military action ever, and we certainly do not need one now.

The world is at risk of another world wide depression. You want to see the end of democratic way of life, just wait and see what happens if the economy of the major countries of the world fails.

Not for me to decide, but I won't stand in the Pentagon's way.

IMO, the CCP is a real threat. And nobody needs military conflict, least of all Taiwan, but it may be inevitable.

That's true, but not as many as China. What's going to make a difference is anti-bombs, and we have some. But their current power source is satellites, and China has anti-satellite satellites. So now we're talking Star Wars.
You are talking Star Wars, I am talking no wars.

Do you remember all the gangster movies. A guy who owed a gangster hundreds of thousands of dollars would be killed and the gangster would say he didn’t kill him because he would not get his money back.

China will not be a problem. One. They own a lot of property here. Two. We owe them a lot of money. Three. We are probably their best customer for goods. China is not going to “make war” on their best customers.

Our trade deficit with Mainland China (PRC) has allowed and continues to allow the PRC to rise to power using US Dollars and subsequent spending for influence throughout the world. As the U.S. power diminishes, so will the ability of the PRC to continue their march forward. Time is of the essence.

As for Taiwan (ROC), we will need to defend the ROC, due to the ROC producing the majority of the global semiconductors. The ROC has hinted at total destruction of this industry... if invaded. The western nations do not want this to happen, nor do they want this industry to fall into PRC's hands.

Darn near everything happening is a result of our (U.S.) own trade policies. We cannot hide from it, imo.

You'd support a war with China if that's what Pentagon leaders said we should do? The head of the Pentagon, otherwise known as the Defense Secretary, was appointed by the president and is just a regular person who is fallible. Just take a look at some of the previous Defense Secretaries — especially the one who got us into the Afghanistan and Iraq quagmires. I believe that "fallible" was his middle name, or perhaps it was "destined to fail."

Also, would you be willing to pay for another war with increased taxes? We're rapidly approaching $30 trillion in debt. Part of that was from the idiotic wars. Meh, perhaps at this point, we should just add everything to the debt and not worry about it until we can no longer pay interest on it and then just let the economy collapse.

Naaa... I'm a misanthrope, but I don't want the economy to collapse.

I watched this last night. I didn't know how pervasive China is expanding its influence ( especially in South Africa ) and probably become the new global leading power/economy. I am interested in your reaction to this presentation. I would prefer a discussion, not a debate. :)

Alfred McCoy is a really interesting orator. He kind of reminds me of Noam Chomsky, but with a more listenable voice and style.

One interesting point he made was about the real winner of our invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, and that winner is China. Without spending a penny, China now has access to Afghanistan's natural resources that are necessary for the production of lithium-ion batteries. How are American battery manufacturers going to compete? They're not. We're going to be at the mercy of China.

It's been said that Iran was the real winner of our war with Iraq for various reasons. The war with Afghanistan cost us some $8 trillion dollars, according to this estimate from Brown University:
https://www.brown.edu/news/2021-09-01/costsofwar

There's really nothing we can do to stop China's hegemony, as McCoy calls it. China is too powerful and efficient. Hell, we can't even build high-speed rail here in the U.S. Just look at how fast a cross country network of high-speed rail lines was designed and built in China. It's impressive, to say the least.

I believe you can thank so many American companies who moved to China so they could pay the Chinese people pennies compared to the dollars to an American worker. Very shortly after that China became a super power!

Yes I agree

I support defending Taiwan.

We're already paying for that. If I remember right, over $750 billion for military spending in 2018, and a 16% increase was approved (or is proposed?) this year.
