Homeland Security is Afraid of Hippies

When I was reading that link about the Canadian RCMP asking for 'future, possible' blood tests, I spotted an interesting title and thought it was worth bringing here. Sort of harkens back to the over reaction of the Ferguson police in the fall.

http://www.infowars.com/police-label-hippy-group-whose-message-is-peace-love-domestic-extremists/

Missoula police are seeking a quarter of a million dollar Homeland Security grant to help them spy on “extremist” organization The Rainbow Family, a loosely affiliated hippy group which stresses non-violence, peace and love. The mayor signed off this week on a proposal that if approved would net the Missoula Police Department $254,930 from the DHS to purchase a mobile command unit that would be used to spy on The Rainbow Family, which is listed as an “extremist” organization in the proposal........The Rainbow Family “describes itself as a nonviolent group spreading the message of peace and love.” The group has only met twice in Montana in the last fifteen years, once in 2000 and once in 2013. The extent of the “threat” posed by the group is that one of its gatherings was described by the U.S. Forest Service as “rowdy”. According to a description of the group’s activity, “All Rainbow Gatherings are held with an open invitation to people of all walks of life, and of all beliefs, to share experiences, love, dance, music, food, and learning.”....Missoula Police Lt. Scott Brodie said that during its 2013 event, the group “created a mess that (needed) to be cleaned up”.

Now doesn't that seem like a great expenditure of taxpayer dollars? After all,' them damn hippies' just can't be trusted!

Well Ya never know what those stoned Hippies might do.... They may just dance their way into a local convience store.. looking for tortilla chips and salsa!!

Better not spread that peace and love around...no room for it in our society!

You may be on to something! Maybe what the cops are really po'd about is the competition at the local donut shop!

Bunch of stoners thAt never clean up after their gatherings, leaving behind many tons of trash & human waste, don't even use the portas. That doesn't display much respect for ones fellow humankind.

As much as I tend to side with those who have a healthy social agenda, after watching a few YouTube videos of these Rainbow people I'm left with the impression that they're a bunch of dirty, coughing, spitting, loud-mouthed cursing jerks who think they're entitled to live off the taxpayer's dollar.

Tons of trash? Where was that in the article? And the Wikipedia page I was reading said that they dig latrine trenches that are then limed, covered over and new ones dug. Why enlarge your carbon footprint (delivery of portapotties, removal of portapotties....) when you can let nature do what nature does best which is recycle?

Do you cough sometimes? And if you were camping, would you be showering everyday or would you perhaps have to satisfy with a head wash in a basin of water? Spitting....do you ever spit? And loud mouthed cursing jerks???? What I saw was people meditating for peace under the blue sky in the sunshine on the Fourth of July and ending it with a parade of children circling and then dancing and music and good times for all.

And in reading the Wikipedia page on these gatherings, it sounds to me like they make a big effort to not be a problem:

'...The Rainbow Family has governed Gatherings of up to 30,000 people. Regional Rainbow gatherings can attract as many as 5,000.[SUP][17][/SUP] The U.S. national gathering occurs around July 1-7th, but people come up to a month earlier to help set up (this is known as "Seed Camp") and remain on site up to a month later to participate in cleanup and to perform site restorations.[SUP][18]...'

[/SUP]
I've finally gotten to an age myself, where I'm trying not to judge people based on how they do their hair or how they dress or how they look. And if these folks eschew consumerism (unlike all of us unfortunately) and they choose to live simply and without the latest 'label' on their backside....so what? As to living off the taxpayers dollar, well where does that come from?
When you have large gatherings there are bound to be folks on the fringe who don't match the stated principles, but that can happen in every neighbourhood in the country. Dismissing generally peaceful people because they chose a different lifestyle says more about us, then it does about them don't you think? Actually, the videos that I watched took me back to my youth very much, just not the numbers.

There was a gathering of RP planned at a remote Vancouver Island location, but townsfolk nixed it, for fear of damage to the environment. That didn't stop the RP, they found another place to have it.

IMO half a million doesn't seem like that much money for policing. It seems more like a token concern -- isn't homeland security's function to be suspicious of x-large gatherings. I wonder if they are present at huge rock concerts and sports events?

Debby, the info re trash & poop came from an unfortunately deceased Old Hippie friend of mine who attended one of the meets & was appalled, said it gave clean honest hippies like himself a bad name.

Debby, as I said I got my impression from watching YouTube videos, among them this one:

Other videos have less cursing and spitting and just more general hippie freakishness (which I don't have a problem with):

Still, a cult is a cult, and while I haven't really seen much sign of organization for the Rainbows it has to be there somewhere. From your Wiki reference -

The Rainbow Family has no official leaders (though plenty of leadership), no codified, strictly enforced or heirarchical (sp) structure, no official spokespersons, no official documents, and no membership.

Their "official" website looks to have been made sometime in the early 1990's:

Rainbow Family of Living Light

Of course, the site has a disclaimer in tune with Rainbow's apparent lack of organization:

This is Not an offical document of any kind by the Rainbow Family. This Home Page is my own creation, and as such only represents my own ideas. In no way does this mean I or anyone else here at welcomehome.org represent the Rainbow Family, regardless of what the Family wingnuts say.

Maybe that first video isn't a fair representation ... maybe they ARE a bunch of harmless New Age hippies ... but when my spidey sense tingles I always follow it, and these folks just seem "wrong" for some reason. It might be something as simple as aimless, youthful rebellion, or the looks on the faces of some of the people in the second video - they look as if they just robbed a bank or kicked a puppy - but I'm not convinced that such a loosely organized group of people gathering in large numbers on public land is a GOOD thing ...

I was around the real hippies back in the early 70's. Lots of em at MU. Wonder if Homeland Security would hire me to identify em and help root em out?

Your own comment makes my point too doesn't it? They're not all bad and as usual in almost every human endeavour, it's usually a small number of 'bums' who ruin a good thing for everyone else. My point then is, we shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush. Not fair at all. Like we have in this group, all senior people. Now if someone outside this group meets an old woman or man who is absolutely horrible and miserable and mean spirited, does that mean that you are?

I agree that the young woman in the first video was aggressive and had a major chip on her shoulder, but as to how they look and live, well, they usually grow up and become one of us or at least a newer version.

Until I turned 25 and had my first baby, I was one of those people which is maybe why I’m not all that bothered by their appearance or even their language. Then my baby, a fledgling business, church membership, kids in church school, and finally now retirement!

As far as the Rainbow Family getting together on Public land, well they are the ‘public’ too, and if the real Rainbow Family folks meet and then make every effort to put things back the way it was as I’ve seen indicated in several places that I’ve looked, how can that be bad? As opposed to America’s cattle ranchers who lease public land for peanuts, kill the wildlife because ‘it might kill a cow’, and destroy the landscape in the process?

Make room for folks who are ‘different’ because next time it might be you who is the different one.

But until they grow up they seem to take delight in making as much trouble as possible. I won't blame the Rainbows for that, though - that's the fault of an individual.

I was a rebel myself but I had limits.

I'm not sure that such a large organized group of people should be referred to as "the public". Often there are requirements, whether Federal, state or local, that if you're going to be holding an event on public land with more than a certain number of people then you need to file a permit.

I would think the cattle ranchers are an entirely different matter.

I'm already "different", but with all these "different" people in this closet it's getting crowded ...

Besides - I'm different in a GOOD way!

College town to the north of me has a yearly "green wienie" gathering at Peace Park. Yes, Peace park. The hippies named it that in the early 70's and it stuck. Anyway, I guess it is a royal mess the day after the gathering.

I am a Stream Team member through our state DNR. The teams do litter pickups all the time in the state. Pisses me off when people litter.

All large groups of people litter.... I would venture to guess that even a group of several thousand of us old folks would have it's share of garbage.. Depends wrappers, ostomy supplies...Poligrip packets... prune pits.. etc...
