An eight-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes has died after her parents allegedly denied her insulin for more than five days. Police will allege the parents knew she was unwell but were part of a religious organisation and believed God would "heal" her. Members of the congregation said she was not given her medication because she would be "raised from the dead" if she passed away. A 50-year-old man and 46-year-old woman have been charged over the death........

There are just too many of these misguided fools around. I ran into this a couple of times during my nursing career and we had to call in the authorities. Parents, in this case, should not have the say over their children's medical treatment.
 

As a Born-Again Christian myself, I can assure you that this represents an extreme minority, even among those that trust in a literal translation of the scriptures, as I do. I personally know of no fellow-believers, past or present, that would withhold needed medical treatment from their child. And I know a lot of church-going folks in a wide variety of churches. But still, there are remote groups that function more like cults that I have read about in news stories that would do this, and yes they should be held accountable.

Historically, missionaries to remote areas have always paved the way by providing needed medical treatment to those living in primitive conditions. And places like Pacific Garden Mission welcome anyone off the street for free meals, a place to sleep, and free medical and dental treatment.

These idiots would justify any outcome, regardless of how bad it was. When it isn't tragic, it's quite amusing. "It's God's Will" is often used.
These types of zealots use religion to justify anything that suits their fancy - including child abuse.
I knew a "Born Again Christian" with a drinking problem. After several DUI's, car crashes & jail time for stalking her ex, I suggested to her that she stop drinking. She said, "When God wants me to change, I will change."
 
I remember a case years ago where a young boy was having seizures and the family refused medical treatment and took him to their priest who performed an exorcism and the boy died during a several hours long exorcism. :mad:
 
I think the parents had a terrible choice to make-either give up their beliefs or give up their daughter. As a nurse, I ran into similar problems, but nothing so severe, Usually, it was they could have "X" treatment, but not "Y". I think your religious beliefs should only extend to you, and to no one else. If the life of your child is at stake, the court may grant approval for medical treatment.
