Another problem coming for Air Travel

In simple terms, the problem is only with the radio altimeter, which measures the height the plane is above the ground. The concern is that the frequencies used for 5G may interfere with the operation of the altimeter. The radio altimeter is mostly used during periods of low visibility. It allows the plane to land safely during that time.

WOW! You get food and alcohol on your flights. That's wonderful! What's the secret? Do you fly 1st class? Do you pay for your food and drinks when you are buying a ticket? Please name the airline you use and your secret of getting food and drinks? I bet you are not flying Westjet (based in Calgary, Canada).
well of course I'm not flying Canadian airways.....and we fly budget airlines as well...

we still get food and alcohol on our flights.. not quite a 3 course meal as we once did, but still food and drink if we want it... but you;re so right, it;s not the flying experience that's so bad, it's the airport experience which is excruciating... and until the pandemic hit I was flying at least 3 times a year ..just dreaded it every time...
Until the pandemic hit, I flew at least 4 times a year for leisure travel. I like plane trips because it tells me I'm going somewhere. About 7 years ago, I had to attend a convention. It was a 3 hour drive or a 55 minute plane ride. I opted for the latter.

I love flying.., I hate the terrible experience of the airport now.. people treated like cattle, not enough space, crowds so deep there;s nowhere to sit flight side.. aggressive and surly security staff... the high cost of airport parking.. and so on ad nauseum . If I could just turn up and get on the plane within half an hour of arriving, I wouldn't care if it was the cheapest budget airline.. or how long the flight was..

I will continue to fly, and hope to again this year, but because we live on an Island really flying is our only sensible option ( although I have taken my car on board a boat, it's expensive and a 2 hour flight equivalent takes 2 days)...

I haven't been keeping up with the news much. More concerned with just getting myself back to some kind of normalcy. However, one problem that I can think of that may cause real issues is planes that land using the airport's ILS system, or Instrument Landing System, which guides the plane down to the runway to make a precision landing will be that the plane's gyro system may receive or emit false data. Not good in any which way for pilots.

I would imagine that airports will have to do some very quick updating of their equipment both at the airport and the manufactures, mainly Boeing and Airbus will also have to install some new devices to keep up with the new generations of technology. Planes use radio waves for a number of instruments onboard, so getting updated instruments should be a primary concern.
Hi oldman.

Would military aircraft be effected?

I wonder if 5G could be weaponized? ....used intentionally.

My daughter lives over 5 hours away by car so I always used to take a flight to visit her. A ticket didn't cost very much more than gasoline, really.

I'm twice vaxxed but I haven't flown the past couple years, and she's only flown up to see me once since covid. (she works)

You are right. The Altimeter sends radio waves to the ground and then the waves are sent back to the altimeter. The altimeter then uses the time that it took to complete the transmission/reception and using it with the speed of light. That's the skinny of it, but scientifically, there's more to it. A lot of airports will give you their altimeter reading when they give their landing instructions. That way, the pilots can accurately set their altimeter if it's not already reading accurate. This is how important it is to have accurate readings.

It seems to me they would correct the issue before implementing the 5G or someone is going to suffer a lot of law suits if there is damage to property or someone is injured or worse because of it. Of course stupid is on the loose these days.

On the 19th January 2022 the following was in the Independent newspaper!

British Airways said on Wednesday it had cancelled a “handful” of flights to
destinations including New York, San Francisco and Boston. It said: “Safety is
always our priority and although we had to cancel a handful of services, we’ve
done everything we can to minimise inconvenience for our customers.
We’ve changed the aircraft operating some of our flights and rebooked those
on cancelled services on to alternatives.”

Dubai-based Emirates, the world’s largest operator of 777s, said it would halt
flights to Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Newark, New
Jersey, Orlando, Florida, San Francisco and Seattle
over the issue. It said it would
continue flights to Los Angeles, New York and Washington.

There are many other Airlines Quoted, but the list is too long to put here.

Mike.
