On 1-4-22, I decided that it was time for a new roof. Mine was 60 years old & leaking in several places. I started checking out contractors - licenses, liability insurance, reviews, etc. for several roofers. I signed a contract with a roofing company & gave the owner a $1,000.00 deposit which he asked for to get a city permit.
I waited for them to contact me with a start date but I didn't hear from them for 9 days. The owner called me & said they would start the job on 1-14-22.
It rained that morning, so the job was moved to 1-25-22. On 1-24-22, the owner called me & said they would not be able to start the job tomorrow because they were having "Problems getting the permit from the city." (Remember, they originally were about to start the job on 1-14-22, so there could NOT have been any problem with the permit.)
I asked, "What kind of problems?"
He first said, "They can't find your address." (obviously, he thinks I'm stupid)
I said, "That sounds ridiculous; they had no trouble finding my address for permits for previous plumbing jobs."
He then changed it to "Well, they got your address wrong; they confused your street name with "Place" instead of "Avenue" & gave the permit to the wrong address." (Yeah....when one lie doesn't work, try another lie)
To make sure there was a paper trail in case I have to sue him to get my $1,000.00 deposit back, I e-mailed the owner, explaining why I was unhappy with his business practices.
He phoned me this morning & said, "I received your e-mail & if you don't want to go ahead with the job, it's OK."
I said, "Fine. When should I expect my deposit back?"
He said, "I'll mail it to you."
