On 1-4-22, I decided that it was time for a new roof. Mine was 60 years old & leaking in several places. I started checking out contractors - licenses, liability insurance, reviews, etc. for several roofers. I signed a contract with a roofing company & gave the owner a $1,000.00 deposit which he asked for to get a city permit.
I waited for them to contact me with a start date but I didn't hear from them for 9 days. The owner called me & said they would start the job on 1-14-22.
It rained that morning, so the job was moved to 1-25-22. On 1-24-22, the owner called me & said they would not be able to start the job tomorrow because they were having "Problems getting the permit from the city." (Remember, they originally were about to start the job on 1-14-22, so there could NOT have been any problem with the permit.)
I asked, "What kind of problems?"
He first said, "They can't find your address." (obviously, he thinks I'm stupid)
I said, "That sounds ridiculous; they had no trouble finding my address for permits for previous plumbing jobs."
He then changed it to "Well, they got your address wrong; they confused your street name with "Place" instead of "Avenue" & gave the permit to the wrong address." (Yeah....when one lie doesn't work, try another lie)

To make sure there was a paper trail in case I have to sue him to get my $1,000.00 deposit back, I e-mailed the owner, explaining why I was unhappy with his business practices.
He phoned me this morning & said, "I received your e-mail & if you don't want to go ahead with the job, it's OK."
I said, "Fine. When should I expect my deposit back?"
He said, "I'll mail it to you."

I agree .. things come up but when they resort to lies and then proceed with others to cover the first one it is insulting....
Just tell me the truth you are not ready maybe a previous job ran over / weather issues whatever but blaming on clerical error seems lame.

Unless you have other information not posted, it could be they only expected to have the submitted permit? On the phone call, maybe you were picking up some suspicious non-verbals of tone of voice? When it didn't show, they may have then found out the reason given. They may have purposely not mentioned they didn't yet have the permit because 95% of the time after submission a permit is issued within a few days. With business all else normal, allowing the benefit of doubt should warily be one's first position.

Yes, more lies are required to cover the original lies.
For a minute, I thought I was talking to Dr. Fauci.

Have you gotten the deposit back in your account yet?
Not yet; I just spoke to him this morning. I'm giving him 5 days.
He can't deposit it in my account; he doesn't have access to it. He'll have to just mail the check.

Today, I got an e-mail from the contractor, verifying that the contract was cancelled & also that he will mail me the refund check for the deposit.
Since it's now in writing, I don't have to worry about it.
And, I just hired a different roofer. He gave me the same estimate & the job starts tomorrow. He didn't even ask for a deposit for the permit. And he also said the permit is NOT $1,000.00 (like the other contractor) it's only $250.00. Another way they rip off people.

rotten that you have to jump thru these hoops. permits are often totally unnecessary... just a money grab. years back was replacing fence around backyard. having dilapidated post & rail ripped out and hauled away and picket in the same exact place. had to get a permit... needed whatever that map-looking thing that shows the layout of the lot with house and any other buildings, like sheds. then i had to drawn on where i was gonna put fence... oh so exact... i shoulda been a surveyor.

I was just about to say that.

$1,000 for an office building or something maybe, but not a private residence!

What is obviously needed is a government approved register for all contractors. Then, if there are problems, it should be easier to get them resolved.

If they are licensed and bonded........ that is the government register....
government oversight does not weed out those who can and will rip people off
