What is your definition of "Old"

I think there comes to the elderly a "crux"; a point where you "give up" trying to enhance life, where you give up hope, give up trying to
reinvent yourself and give up the pursuit for happiness. You "let go" and resign to a disappointing realization that wonders and the magical spark of aliveness, the joy from the senses, are gone from your life. It's an absence of happiness.
Only then, can you call yourself "old". Chronological age is meaningless.
Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year's gone by and how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better self will emerge, with each flicker of the candles on the cake we know it's not to be. That for the rest of our sad, wretched, pathetic lives, this is who we are to the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably. Happy birthday? No such thing.

My wife and I were old 13 years ago. Following a period of bereavement after her father had passed, back in 2009, I took my wife away to Scotland for a week. It cheered her up enough to take her out on the last night of our trip. We went to a rip-roaring Big Band cabaret come swing dance affair. What an impression a couple of geriatrics made on one young person: http://remotecards.blogspot.com/2009/07/old-folk-dancing-like-they-were-young.html

Are we talking physically old, or mentally old? To my mind, if you're over 70, you are physically old. That's nature. Aging happens. Mentally old is different. Some people are mentally old in their 40's. Some, never get mentally old. Betty White is one example.

I'm physically old. Whether or not I'm mentally old, you'd have to ask my wife.
