Remember that song from Courtship of Eddie's Father? I think of that line whenever I think of my best friend forever (BFF).
We met when she became my music teacher 45 years ago and have been best friends ever since. My BFF is 7 years younger than I am but is as wise or wiser. She knows most of my deep, dark secrets and I often say she saved me a ton on therapists. I’d trust her with my money and my life. I love how she corrected me when I made mis-steps…she’d say ”do you think you could have handled that better?” And the answer was always yes. But she never made me feel dumb or like I’m a bad person.
Since the pandemic we had started keeping in better touch. She lives in another state and has been busier in retirement it seems. I let her call because she likes to talk while she’s walking or biking and that’s not always the same time each day. After my DIL died, she’s been calling me every day, sometimes twice a day despite her extremely busy schedule. For the past couple of months, as musical director she's been arranging music for two theater productions as well as rehearsing the singers in groups and individually. Which brings me to another reason I love her. She’s an exceptionally talented musician who is as humble as she is talented.
She has played for several famous acts…to name a few...The Drifters, The Crystals, Lou Christie, Mary Wells, Jack Jones as well as with Bob Hope’s and David Brenner’s bands. She toured with Tiny Tim and Miss Vickie for about three months. And @dseag2 she did play in shows with Lisa Fischer when they were on a tour with other acts back in the 80s. In addition, she wrote the score for an off Broadway play. Before the pandemic she frequently toured with theater groups. When my grandson was hit by a car, she took time to call and check on him just before she was supposed to go on stage! My BFF accepted impromptu invitations to play on my album and later a single when she was up here. She nailed her parts perfectly, first take, without ever hearing either of the songs beforehand or having sheet music to refer to.
She never forgets my birthday (I always get a lovely card) and remembers the birthdays of my son and his children. My son and grandchildren call her Auntie. Friendships like this are not a dime a dozen and are to be treasured. Here she is with my granddaughter and me after our wonderful lunch when she was up here in November. Now tell us something about your BFF. @Pecos @Pinky @Medusa
