Who are all those Robots?

So being a former research scientist and a "numbers guy", I am often curious about the underpinnings of Senior Forum. At any one time there might be 200 or so people on this site, but only 40 are members and the rest are Guests. Any thoughts on that disproportionality? Are these regular guests or people who just stop by and possibly never return? ("He never returned, no he never returned, and his fate is still unknown")

I am even more curious about all those Robots. Many identify as either Bing or Google, but occasionally Proximic or Majestic-12 are in the mix as well. What are they looking for and why? I assume some sort of data mining is part of the answer.

Yes the guests can be people who are members but are just not signed in..or they could be lurkers who can read some of the forum without registering....and then there's the Internet Bots who are searching all the time for info for all sorts of things..
Bots follow links on web pages, known as crawling. This is the way a bot discovers new or updated pages that can be added to the search engine index.

As the bot visits each website it detects links on pages and adds them to its list of pages to crawl.

New sites, changes to existing sites, and dud links are noted. These are used to update the search engine index.

Have people who are not New Englanders ever heard of that clever and funny song?
😁

Welcome to the "Hotel California". Some very mysterious and unexplained stuff happens here. Be care careful too, you can check in but you can't leave.:ROFLMAO:
I was still singing that above song about Charlie,
(who rides forever 'neath the streets of Boston) in my head, when I read this follow-up post. 😂😂😅🤣
Oh yeah, that too, in California!🙃🤩

The actual topic of the OP of this thread,(site guests, bots, etc)
is interesting too, 🤓

but these musical references are giving me a welcome laugh, today!
Thanks for that!
