Are gas prices “driving you crazy?”

I paid $4.19 a gallon for gas yesterday, which is the most that I’ve ever paid for a gallon in my life. I know that people in the UK and elsewhere would still consider my prices a bargain, but I can remember how Americans went ballistic when gas prices hit a dollar many years ago.

How are gas prices in your neck of the woods, and are they changing the amount of driving that you do? ⛽️
 
WE pay around the equivalent of $8 US for a gallon of fuel here, we pay £1.51 per LITRE... on average at the pumps, and some places are charging up to £1.60 .. and on the first of April all our Utilities are going up by 54 %... yep you read it right.. 54 %... and now further to that we have the threat of oil shortages due to the Russian Ukraine thing..

God alone knows how we're all going to cope...

In US prices and US gallons, here in the UK we pay $7.68. https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/United-Kingdom/gasoline_prices/
Like you, I remember when garages ran an advert that said: "Save time, buy a pound's worth." You got just over four UK gallons for that pound.
 
I am humbled by your UK prices! Americans tend to be straitjacketed by their own perspectives. I am thankful for the reality check that my few virtual UK friends give me. 👍

With prices at record highs by American standards, I do find myself walking to more nearby places like the post office, even though this means dodging speeding cars, road construction barriers, and (ugh!) dead things on the road… 🙀

but you can't state that price because our fuel is all different prices...

E10 (95 octane)​

This became the standard grade of petrol in Great Britain on 1 September (2021), while it is due to be rolled out in Northern Ireland in 2022. To find out more, see our informative E10 guide.

Premium Unleaded (95 RON)​

Although it’s called premium, this is actually the standard unleaded petrol available across Europe and is suitable for almost all petrol engines.

Super Unleaded (97/98 RON)​

The highest-octane fuel widely available is required for some high-performance Japanese cars and preferable for others (like Porsches), although in most cars any benefits are negligible.

The cheapest being Unleaded which is currently £1.51 per LITRE at my local supermarket forecourt.. 5 litres in a UK gallon £7.55.. = $9.96 cents... US...however there are 3.78 litres in a US gallon... which means at the lowest unleaded petrol price, if an American was to come and fuel up with unleaded at our cheapest supermarket forecourt, he would pay $5. 70 per US gallon ( 3.7 litres).. but if he was to fill up with a UK Imperial gallon, it would cost him... £6.88... ​


All that said.. that is for the very cheapest Unleaded fuel.. if like my husband you drive a more powerful vehicle.. and use Super unleaded, than your Bill will be approx £7.25..UK pounds = to $9.56 cents US

Diesel is approx £1.55 per litre ..equivalent to $2.04 US...per LITRE...

Last week gas went up to $4.34. Yesterday gas went down to $3.84. I was surprised that it dropped, but I know the price will rise again along with the price of groceries and other items.
 
If these gas prices go much higher, the costs are going to really impact a lot of people....especially those who have to drive to/from work, every day. Luckily, being retired, we've just altered our routine, so as to limit any needless running around....a weekly trip to the nearby stores is going to be about it. Our State is on the "low end" of this spike...due to reasonable taxes....but some States with higher taxes are really going to go off the chart if these prices don't begin to moderate.
Crude oil "futures" are hovering around $120/B today...which is about $80/B more than what has been normal for this time of year.
 
My understanding is that most people don't mind paying more because it's for a good cause. Also, diesel will be more for truckers so food prices will have to be raised.

I have never paid $4 a gallon. If I recall correctly, the highest I ever paid was around $3.19. That most likely was in 2008.

On the way to the gym this morning, the signage at a gas station near me was $3.99. I still have a half tank left so by the time I need to refill, it should be way pass $4.

Honestly, I don’t feel sorry for my stepson. He had to have a big truck because that’s what all the guys he works with do. Got a fancier one later. A couple of years prior to that job, he sold his truck and said he’d never have another. He’s lucky that he makes really good money.

Speaking about big vehicles, are Hummers still on the road? I heard they get around 9 miles per gallon.
