Not all thieves are stupid

I got this in an email yesterday..Thought I would pass it on...

1.LONG-TERM PARKING

Some people left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration/insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

2.GPS:

Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

3.CELL PHONES:

I never thought of this! This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says, "I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago." When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral lesson:
a. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.
b. And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.
c. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

4.PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART SCAM:
A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the children's seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf/ Wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it.

please let your family and friends know so they don't get caught in a scam.

I have my doctor surgery programmed into my GPS ..but I have to admit I do have ''daughter' , and ''hubby' in my phone, because I always feel if ever I was in an accident rescuers would have to know who to contact out of the hundreds of names in my phone...difficult one to get around that one. ..although tbf neither my husband nor daughter would be idiotic enough to send a pin number by text at my request without first calling me..

Thanks for the post. I'm passing it on to my family.

I thought ICE by a name or number would work well [ in case of emergency ], but that, too, would be a give-away, wouldn't it? Ouch!!

Going to go clean out my car glove compartment this very morning. Tho who would want to break into a 14 yr old outback with bad paint and no electronic goodies?
And every time I see someone leave their purse in their shopping cart basket I want to grab them and warn them! My daughter lost her purse that way!

Some people are just downright scumbag thieves regardless of who or where you keep your purse, look at this video shown in the news last week of this middle aged couple stealing the purse from a disabled woman in the store...the scary things is they are the type of people most wouldn't give a second look to...

Here in the states it is against the law not to have your vehicle registration in the vehicle at all times. Thieves can find your home address easily from that. I don't know what the answer to that is. As to my garage door, I have the electronic lock set in the garage so even I cannot open or close it with the remote. Which means if I intend to be gone a long while and have set the lock I have to come in with a key and through the house to unlock the control. Thieves piss me off.

In Spain too we have to have our insurance docs in the car , but fortunately it's the opposite here in the Uk, and everyone is continually advised not to keep drivers licences or insurance docs in the car!

All we can do is put them in a locked glove box just to make it harder for them to get at.

I know that some of what I posted is not entirely true, but it does help!!

On Saturday night hubby and I went out to dinner for grand daughter's birthday in a suburb 45 mins away by car. When we came home we noticed that there was the usual light on in the lounge room plus one in the bedroom. What was a bit unusual was that the front door was open with light streaming out through the unlocked wire door.

Thoughts of burglars entered our heads but not so. We had just left the house and neither of us had bothered to shut the front door.
I doubt the neighbours would have thought anything of it because we often sit in the lounge watching TV with the front (and back) door open because of the heat.

In our area there has been no crime that anybody can remember at all and many have been here for 40 years. We never lock the car and sometimes forget the key in it. We never worried about being burgled the entire 9 weeks we were away. It's just a very inconvenient and quiet location for anyone to try to rob. Our friends did check on the house and water my plant, and the mail goes through a slot in the door. Our new heating system is digital and was set for vacation mode.

Last crime I can remember in our larger area - a coastal road with 4 villages that is about 13 miles long - was a couple of idiots who took the bus, got off at the local post office/shop, beat up the clerk and robbed the store. Then got back on the bus!

This scam is going around and I just got the call not 10 minutes ago.
Hello, this is the IRS calling about monies owed to us and we are starting a law procedure against you. You must send a certain amount to us, she didn't say as I took call on answering machine, as soon as possible. Call, ----------now to avoid any actions taken against you.
Wonder how many folks have been taken by this scam?
