All of the customs we follow- and everybody does it.

You just buy stuff made by Shenzhen sweatshops.
Not actually but the clothes I’ve bought here were hand made and the food that I’ve consumed was raised or grown locally so. So as far as I know, no corporations have been looking after my needs for at least the past several months. My utilities do come from a corporation but I’d hardly call their services “catering to my whims.”

PS Mom said she misses you! 😉

Such a place still exists? 😮

I would say that would be refreshing. For at least awhile.

You really want me to die that bad?

Then there's headboards on beds. Why have them. Are they going to stop you from falling off the head of your bed?
I use them for leverage

That's how I feel about dishwashers. When I was married, we bought a house that came with one. I'd ask my wife, "What's the purpose of it when you're washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?" (just like that Cascade commercial).

My current house also came with a dishwasher. I use it for storage.
Every place we've had, even the cabin, has had a dishwasher
She's done a great job for 53 years

I notice stuff nobody cares about. Like curtains. When you think of it, curtains are weird. We build windows to let in light, and immediately cover them up with cloth. And homes have to have curtains.
Not our house. I hate having a dark house so I have vertical blinds on the windows and they are open most of the time. So people can see into our house? So what? The plus is that I can see out.

No bedhead, just a base and mattress. Less to dust.
We have all these customs we follow. Everybody keeps their jewels in the same place. Why?
Jewels? The only jewel I own is on my third finger, left hand. Any jewellery I inherited I have passed down the line. All of my cheap baubles are kept in a drawer for easy rummaging.
We follow these customs without thinking about it. I only thought of three customs.
I don't decorate for Easter but do put out some for Advent/Christmas. Don't celebrate St Patrick's Day or Hallowe'en and don't get excited on Australia Day. No flag waving for me.

I don't even have set days for housework tasks and I don't do ironing any more unless absolutely necessary. Cannot remember the last time I ironed anything. I am fully liberated from society's expectations. Hooray for the 2nd wave feminists.

Edit - oops. I came late to this thread and seem to be out of touch with the present conversation.

Um, what was the question?

I have blinds. Used to have big heavy curtains, full of my dad's cigarette smoke. Switched to blinds when I remodeled.
I don't really follow the custom of decorating for holidays. It seems as soon as you put them out for show, you have to put them away again.

Love my dishwasher. Although I do a lot of washing by hand before I put them in...until now. HD explained the science behind that and the dishwashing soap.

I'm really not one to follow too many traditions. Didn't even wear green yesterday or make corned beef and cabbage.

We used to do some moderate decorating for the Christmas holidays and it was a family affair. Usually fun, but did wind up in a knock down blow out affair one year. I opened the front door in frustration and my brother threw the tree out on the lawn. We began again more civilly the next day.

Re: the original post: I thought I was the only one who wondered why certain decor is repeated the same way in every household.
I understand function for livability but beyond that, I see things differently too and don't quite understand why certain customs are followed.
I like breaking the rules a little bit. Shake it up!

Most of my windows have blinds too.. horizontal venetians.. and some rooms have roller blinds... but I also have black out curtains in one bedroom and in the livingroom
