1974 Biggest Shootout In LAPD History

There's this.

I was researching what particular LAPD shootout was being emulated in the picture "HEAT" and most commenters mentioned the "North Hollywood Shootout". This particular shootout in which 9,000 rounds were believed to have been expended by both sides weren't even in the top 3. Go figure.

I remember it well & heard the gunfire over the phone. I was 19 & had a part-time phone sales job & we phoned people in that area. Every time someone answered the phone, I asked them, "What's all that noise?"

My running buddy, living in a foster home , sneaked off to see what all the shooting was about.
He stopped a slug with his stomach:
" It just barely broke my skin...then it fell on the pavement...no big deal, me and the other guys just said Wow!...
the cops ran us off"

Really not where you wanted to be at the time. This and the riots in 92.

I almost ran out of ammo one time. A lot of it was suppressive fire behind cover. You could have as much ammo as you wanted to carry but you could be seen as overcompensating. Still better than running out. It was a standard to have 2 magazines plus one loaded. Around midway through the 2000's it was 3. Where I was which was a small town was quite peaceful when I first joined then it got progressively worse and worse.

The standard load for Toronto Police today is 3 mags, plus the one in the Glock, and the old shotguns have been replaced with the C7 carbine in 5.56 mm. Its the standard Canadian Forces infantry weapon . The previous C1A1 rifle in 7.62 mm was considered to be "too penetrating " a round for Police use. JimB.

Interesting that they used the C1A1 which is basically the FN FAL, quite uncommon in the US.

I remember they didn't know if Patty Hearst was there or if she was still alive.
To this day it's still questioned how much she did willingly or as a result of brainwashing. My thing is according to some apparently she had opportunities when left alone she could've fled but she didn't. This helped convict her.

Now I think current tactics would've prevented the scale of the shootout but not most deaths. SWAT teams today much better trained and more precise. Unless providing supressive fire for movement returning fire probably should be minimized in an urban environment. Still doesn't negate perps like this ie supposed revolutionaries yet jeopardizing civilian lives for their own gain.

Stockholm syndrome is a condition in which hostages develop a psychological bond with their captors during captivity. Stockholm Syndrome results from a rather specific set of circumstances, namely the power imbalances contained in hostage-taking, kidnapping, and abusive relationships.

Think Patty Hearst, and Elizabeth Smart (who asked the police not to hurt her kidnappers).

It was the standard issue for the Canadian Forces for about 35 years, so there were lots available. I have fired it a number of times and i liked it. If you ever want to bust through a concrete block wall, the 7.62 round is good at doing that. JimB.
