My name is Molly and like the title says I recently turned 50 near the end of February.

Here are a few things about myself:

I am Profoundly Deaf ( I contracted Bacterial Meningitis when I was a newborn)
I have a 16 year old daughter named Shelby (she will be turning 17 in April)
I have a degree in Accounting from Gallaudet University
I am employed as a Bookkeeper at the cities law firm
I have a dog named Schatzi
I am currently single
I am raising my daughter on my own just as my mom did with me
I love attending Church
I love reading
I love spending time with my daughter
 

Welcome @Silent Rose , aka Molly! I think you will be a great addition here. Being deaf shouldn't be an issue at all in this place, LOL!

Congrats, youngster! You are on the lower end age wise here, but that is ok, communicating this way age matters little, and we always need new blood. And new people with new ideas.

I turned 50 once, almost 20 years ago.
 

Welcome to the group. I certainly have read about Gallaudet University! Very well known and very well regarded!

I am disabled. My wife is the Media Relations director of a university.

We have two cats. One is a Calico and one is a Tortoise shell.

Communicating by text is easy for me. My main source of communication is ASL as I other than the first few weeks of my life have not heard sound and no adaptive equipment can help that for my situation unfortunately. So my verbal communication although it is much improved is still not something that would be easily understood by a hearing person that hasn't been around me often. For example, my daughter who completely able to hear can fully understand me, but most cannot.

I too have a daughter who has a Birthday in April as I do too.. our birthdays are 21 years difference) minus 4 days apart except my daughter will be 46... in 2 weeks ' time.

I was born into a deaf mute family on my paternal side, so from before I could talk verbally I could sign BSL...at least so I'm told..altho' these days with those family members now all gone except one whose now almost 80 but lives in another country , I rarely have the opportunity to use BSL and I'm sure extremely rusty. .. but of course since then , electronic convo;s ..texts, etc.. make things so much easier...

Thanks Molly, that is interesting. I have never known a totally deaf person, not well anyway.

Listened to a lecture by a deaf man once. It was hard but he was understandable. He was from Australia and you could hear a little of the accent. When you had a question you needed to get up and flick the light switch. He was surprisingly good at lip reading.

When I was in high school on the wrestling team we had a meet at the school for the deaf and blind. I got a blind guy, and was really surprised by his skill... Didn't take him long to pin me. I wasn't very good. The visit was interesting about half the wrestlers were deaf.

I lived in Baltimore for a couple of years 30+ years ago, I was there for the Orioles World Series win, and the Colts departure. Found it a very interesting place, and liked it more than I expected to. Miss it sometimes. When I travel back I try to stay at the Admiral Fell Inn (Fell's Point), is it still there? Haven't been back in a while and probably won't get there again.

99% of how I communicate is through ASL. I am able to read lips as well, but that is more on a 1 to 1 basis and using these electronic things like Zoom or other things it is impossible to read the lips on those things and forget it if more than one person is on the Zoom call and the conversation is flipping around. Plus verbally my skills although much improved over the years the regular person who is not around me much would struggle to understand me.

Growing up that is why just about everyone who I associated with was deaf or hard of hearing other than my mom and other family members. Once I got to Gallaudet it was a totally different experience. The University centers around the deaf community, but the highly encourage everyone to get out into the DC community. Which I did. That changed a lot for me.

Living in Baltimore and growing up in Ellicott City has been great. Sure there are problems as there are in any city, but I much prefer the city then the country. My daughter is also that way and we also are not that far from the countryside.

Molly, thank you for sharing the details of your life, and welcome! It is always so nice to have someone relatively young join this forum. You bring a different perspective, which is appreciated. I hope you enjoy your interaction with other members here!

Thanks, I do work from home mostly, but I go into the office at least once if not twice per week. The office is less than 15 minutes away so it is not that bad at all.

One of my 1st jobs was working at a local law firm, in late 70's early 80's there for 3 yrs I basically was a 'gopher' delivered the attys mail/lunches,did outside delivery to other court houses.At the time thought I would follow in my dad's footsteps, he was a lawyer decided against it I learned how a law firm operates
I love to read,go to church every wk{weather permitting}

Hello Sue, working for the city attorneys and keeping the books is quite a challenging job. I do however enjoy the flexibility in having the opportunity of working from home most days even before that became a thing that most people do now. The job also keeps me busy which I also like.

Reading keeps my mind stimulated. I do have a teenage daughter in the house so that is also quite stimulating as well and we do spend a lot of time together as we both like flowers and gardening and when we are able going to the beach.

Church is something that keeps me going throughout the entire week. Even though I am Profoundly deaf I have my daughter who interprets the message and even sometimes at the service they have others who sign the message and even the worship music. I also spend at least sometime each day reading the Bible.
