What do you think about what Will Smith did to Chris Rock?

I heard some commentary tonight making a racial issue out of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock and others just make an issue out of the violent act. Personally, I am so tired of cheap and offensive jokes, I am in favor of what Will Smith did because I think we need to draw some lines in the defense of human dignity. But I can also see how tolerating physical violence can be problematic. What do you think?

Will Smith's aggressive act showed an over reaction on his part. He could have waited until he was calmed down and gone after the event and spoken to him. He did not have to use physical force. I thought that was brutal. The look on his wife's face said it all. I felt sorry for her.

I feel disgusted at Will Smith. There's no excuse for his actions.. ! period!
 
I've spoken enough on this subject. I'm on Team Chris Rock, all the way. He made a joke, which I found funny, to a couple who discuss their private lives every chance they get. People are way too sensitive today........people are taking offense too easily. If one is so sensitive, stay home, don't watch TV, don't read the papers, but keep your grouchiness to yourselves and don't spoil the party for everyone else. Don't listen to comedy, that is essential for your protective well being.

Even medieval kings had fools to keep things light and in perspective. The fool was the only one able to speak truth to power.

This is not an excuse for nastiness, that has no place in comedy. Chris made a joke. A joke. Told at an event where such comments were always welcome. Chris knew the audience and played to the crowd on their level. Will Smith has problems with self control, I wish he had been arrested but Chris refused to press charges against his show business colleague.

Hollywood is a different world. People in the movie industry quickly forget what real life is. Most of us don’t attend cocktail parties, premiers and dinner parties that cost about $300 a plate.

These people also forget who makes it possible for them to make millions for acting in a movie, doing a comic routine in concert form or like Howard Stern, being a radio personality.
 
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was there and prepared to arrest Will Smith and press charges for battery...

"They were saying to Chris Rock, you know, 'This is battery,' was the word they use in that moment... 'We’re prepared to get him right now. You can press charges. We can arrest him.'"

If Will Smith wasn't wrong then why would the police show up and say what they said?

Parents of children care, who protect their children from watching violence on the news but feel safe letting them watch the Academy Awards LIVE. Then seeing LIVE hatred, violence, and a man screaming at the top of his lungs, twice, "Keep my wife's name out of your F****** mouth! Then being allowed to receive praise and a trophy when kids thought trophies were for good sportsmanship.

...and most people of integrity are uncomfortable with it.

I was extremely verbally abused in the house growing up. I was also very bullied in school, even physically. And by a teacher in front of other students regarding my weight. What right do I have to hit/slap someone. Oh I wish I could sometimes. I think Will Smith was wrong.

People are trying to spin race into this. But Chris Rock could have immediately physically retaliated. It would be a reaction, but he didn't.

I think you are right Pinky. I've always liked Will Smith...he's come a long way from being a rapper to being a major box office draw...a superstar. I respected that his raps were clean, not vulgar. I loved him in Independence Day which I've seen several times and other movies I've seen him in. As others have mentioned, I believe there was something else going on there. To have his accomplishments marred by his senseless act of violence, in front of millions no less, is disappointing and sad.
 
California Penal Code (warrantless misdemeanor arrest):

Sec. 836
(a)A peace officer may arrest a person in obedience to a warrant, or, pursuant to the authority granted to him or her by Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, without a warrant, may arrest a person whenever any of the following circumstances occur:

(1)The officer has probable cause to believe that the person to be arrested has committed a public offense in the officer’s presence.
