Frightening outbreak of severe hepatitis in very young children, as young as age 2

UK, Scotland, and Alabama state health officials are reporting a sudden outbreak of severe hepatitis in young kids just since January, and no one knows yet what's causing it.

Scotland's theory is that it could be because kids were cooped up indoors for over 2 years, crippling their immunity. Their theory is prompting studies to see if kids were exposure to some common adenovirus such as cold or flu before developing liver disease.

3 or 4 kids under age 5 required a liver transplant. Several others are terminal and waiting for a transplant. One died of liver failure. ☹️

I've watched him before and will watch this in its entirety later. What has been done to kids in the past two years is criminal IMHO.
 
Have the seasons been unusually warm resulting in more flies around?

Hep A is transmitted by flies crawling over uncovered food and by lack of hand hygiene.
Hep C is transmitted by body fluids, not usually a problem with young children.

Edit - cannot find any similar phenomenon in Australia and WHO says the liver disease does not seem to be caused by hepatitis A, B, C, D or E. Sounds like a novel virus might have come to plague us. Incidentally the word hepatitis just means an inflamed liver.

HEALTH officials have raised the alarm after dozens of children in the UK became infected with hepatitis with no clear explanation as to what caused the outbreak.​


The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced on April 8 that children with hepatitis, or liver inflammation, have required assessment at specialised centres, with a “small number” needing liver transplants. While hepatitis viruses (hepatitis A, B, C, D and E) are the most common cause of hepatitis, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has ruled out these viruses as the cause, leaving experts scratching their heads.

Hepatitis can be deadly and is known to sometimes cause liver failure.

On Friday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) identified 74 cases of severe, acute hepatitis among children across Britain, with more cases expected to be announced over the coming days. Doctors and scientists are now investigating the 49 cases in England, 13 in Scotland and 12 across Wales and Northern Ireland. Six of these children have reportedly had to undergo liver transplants so far, the typical treatment for end-stage liver failure.

Dr Meera Chand, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA, said officials across the UK are working to “investigate a wide range of possible factors which may be causing children to be admitted to hospital with liver inflammation known as hepatitis”.

“One of the possible causes that we are investigating is that this is linked to adenovirus infection. However, we are thoroughly investigating other potential causes. Normal hygiene measures such as good handwashing, including supervising children, and respiratory hygiene, help to reduce the spread of many of the infections that we are investigating. We are also calling on parents and guardians, to be alert to the signs of hepatitis, including jaundice, and to contact a healthcare professional if they are concerned.”

Yeah, Dr Mobeen mentioned they think it could be a brand new virus. (I forgot that part already)

You mean keeping them cooped up? I agree. Literally 10's of thousands of pediatricians were saying that wasn't necessary and it was a horrible idea. Paxton and I spent time outdoors every day he was here during the pandemic. He was 3.
 
really not surprised we will be seeing other infections and perhaps " super germs " exploding as well

I expect soon we will also see an explosion of MRSA and resistant infection since hand sanitizer was all over and over used .... this creates resistance and worse fast moving infections that will not respond to basic treatments.
 
@chic @Warrigal @Pepper because you had specific questions and thoughts, here's Dr Campbell going into a little more detail, and numbers too. Apparently the UK has the most cases right now but the WHO is warning this could become an epidemic. Very possibly a short one, though, because all professionals involved are looking for the cause 24/7.

I loved that movie, The Blob. The old one. I was only 7 or 8 when I saw it and it really fascinated me. Actually, I'm pretty sure it was the first creature-feature I ever saw. I was hooked on them after that, which was kind of a bummer because we didn't have a TV. But my cousin did, so I was keen on spending the night at Mike's every weekend so we could watch this show called Friday Night Frights. Came on at 11pm, so all the grown ups were asleep. Those movies didn't scare us, though, they cracked us up. And we always discussed what we would do in that situation, creature geniuses that we were.

Anyway, aren't we just about overdue for the Zombie Apocalypse? I've heard the DoD has a game plan. Seriously. I'd love to know what it is. Wonder if it's online...
