Back in the 70s, a person going through documents in Albany, NY, ran into 70,000 pages in medieval Dutch. Turned out that they were records from New Amsterdam, the colony that later became New York City. A lot of the records were court records.
This project turned into a book called, "The Island at the Center of the World" --- which is a wonderful history book.
Re Neighbors, in those records is the actual dialogue between two disputing neighbors. Apparently, one would annoy the other, by giving him a sentry's warning call. Basically, taking a gun, standing a post and yelling out, "Who goes there?" Whenever his neighbor (who he knew very well), would pass by. You know, threatening him with a gun for absolutely no reason.
The neighbor getting harassed, finally could not take it any more, and in medieval Dutch (as quoted right in the court record)....replied with, .....yes, .....the medieval Dutch version of "UP Y*URS!!"
Just can't make this stuff up. Great book. Lot of real history and also fun anecdotes like that one.
I had not known that "Up Y*urs" was a phrase in Medieval Dutch. But now, I do know! Maybe this is the origin of the cursing New Yorker!?!

Some day in history, they are going to find an inscription by a caveman from 50,000 years ago, that says the same thing...
