I was using the self serve checkout a Woolworths today and noticed a little animated face on the top right of the screen.

As I studied the face I realised it was my very own face.
It seems that Woolworths are viewing their shoppers at the checkout.
I gave them the bird to register my displeasure.
When I asked the checkout assistant about it she simply shrugged her shoulders. 🤷‍♀️

Wow! You still have a Woolworths???!!! We haven't had one here in a very long time. I've noticed those funny mirrors throughout other stores as well. Of course they are going to keep an eye on shoppers but I don't remember seeing any at the registers. Heck if you made it to the register...you probably didn't steal anything. Remember these prices?

I do not remember such low prices.

Just researched and it seems ''Woolworth'' Australia has no connection with FW Woolworth US & UK...

“Woolworths Limited has never had any connection with FW Woolworth either in the US or the UK,” said Mr Ward.

“The only conflict we have had was when Woolworths Limited established its buying office in London in 1929 and was unable to use the name Woolworths as it was already registered in the UK. The buying office was subsequently registered as Australasian Chains Stores Ltd.”

The US company only trademarked its own name in its home market, Canada and in the UK where for decades it was such a staple of the high street shoppers assumed it was British through and through. There, like Australia, it was known almost universally as “Woolies”.

Interesting to read the following about the Australian Wolworth... pretenders to the Throne..

My mind immediately thought of Woolworth's 5 & 10 (five and dime) stores that existed here (USA) long ago. You could get a hot dog, fries, and a Coke for a quarter! They took most of my lunch money - but for trinkets (I wasn't a big eater back in the day) and I would buy bits of jewelry or an occasional goldfish!

@Bretrick I was checking out at a local store and saw this small animated picture on their computer screen.

Walmart here has the video camera on at self-checkout. I can understand that with all the theft they have. I don’t love WM but don’t want to pay more for the habits of shoplifters. I presume they still have someone overhead watching that area and now there are signs to keep your receipt handy when exiting the store.

Can't blame a store for keeping an eye on people in the self-checkout lanes - and letting shoppers know that they're doing so. Shoplifting and other forms of theft are a huge problem for retailers.

I imagine Bretrick could get exhausted giving the bird to cameras in London.

Research by CCTV.co.uk concludes that in London there is now 1 CCTV Camera for every 13 people, meaning there are now 691,000 CCTV Cameras in London (2020/21) London is often called the CCTV capital of the world, and for good reason. :D

He's got a pretty big presence in the US, too. Private security cameras are everywhere, it seems. Nearly everyone in our neighborhood has some kind of outdoor camera, whether they're Rings or something else.

I was using the self checkout at local CVS (national drug store chain) and like the OP say a picture of me on the screen. The camera was somewhere above and in front of me, as I could see face and the top of my head.

Just when did I start looking like Grandpa Ray???

Vancouver, BC had a motion before city council to install more CCTV cameras. Defeated by all but the councillor who brought it forward. One reason given for a no vote was that it wasn’t fair to the down and out citizens. The next news item is about the amount of crime and theft in the city.
