"Porch Pirates" not only steal your packages, they're stealing your mail.

Thank you for turning me onto Best Fails Ever channel! :ROFLMAO:

In all seriousness, we have a communal mailbox with locks for a few houses and some ass still managed to break into it and steal mail. That's why I receive everything in email and only junk in the mail. That will be a good strategy until I get hacked.

We have a communal mailbox unit as well, and we live in a high-crime area, but it's situated right next to the office and the maintenance and security guys' apartments, it's behind a gate that locks at 5pm, and there are 3 cameras aimed at it - as secure as they could make it.

I've gone paperless with all my bills and do as much business as I can via email. Once a year I get mail from the SSA that has the last 4 digits of my SS number on it, but in the 6 yrs I've been here, that mailbox unit has never been breached.

Yeah, I like that fails channel. I also check out Ring Door-cam videos, too. Keeps me abreast of what these porch pirates are getting up to, and then I pass it on to my oldest son. He & his wife travel a lot and their mailbox is on their house. They got a Ring doorbell & security system 2 yrs ago.

I am not surprised to learn that crime is on the increase. As interest rates rise, inflation increases the price of everything and the cost of fuel goes up, certain elements of our society will turn to crime. I get a real kick out of reading that many of our younger people want to defund the police. Wonderful idea that I'm sure is totally supported by all members of the criminal class. No police will have all our criminals going around and give each other the "high 5." It's going to be "open season" on your home, your possessions, your car and anything else "just lying around."

I live in a pretty safe but modest neighborhood of mostly single level ranch houses, which seems to provide a peaceful feeling — maybe because it doesn't feel like people are looking down at you from two story homes. Just a few miles north, there's quite a bit of crime and gangs. I don't know if they're porch pirates or where they go to rob and burglarize. I would guess they'd tend to go to ritzier areas, although in this day and age, most expensive houses would have surveillance cameras. I'm going to get one in the near future.

I live in a high-crime area. Local thieves don't usually rob upper-class homes because they figure there's a security system with cameras. But they will if they're sure no one is home...they just pull up their hoodies or wear masks and park down the street.

The block I live on has a huge multi-storied nursing home across the street, and I wonder if that is why people don't steal things off our porches. I am sure that there are security cameras everywhere; the nursing home property extends all the way around the block and there are assisted living units there was well. Thankfully my mail slot is right on my front door and packages are usually left between the storm door and the front door, and not visible from the street.

This advantage to living rural. No home delivery by USPS, house is way back from road and packages left on porch by commercial carriers would not be visible from road.

Not only our dog but nieghbor to the north side's dogs bark when strange vehicles pull up to house. and if we came back before they made back out the quarter mile drive they couldn't get past us. Would love to see try doing try running on foot whole way to road on this terrain with at least 3 kinds of cactus including Chollas that are 5+ ft tall, and lits of small rocks that shift under your feet

Plus you'd have to be an idiot to be a porch pirate in this small a community. Less than a thousand people, even if thief got away, you likely know them or would spot them at a store, landfill or Post Office. Also too many folks have guns to hunt and protect livestock.

I haven't had a problem since I filled an amazon box with kitty litter, let the cats use it then closed it up and put it on the porch.
@feywon I also live in a rural town, but that didn't stop some idiot from trying to do so.
Now when I expect a parcel I let Miss Chicka out in the front yard, she is well acquainted with our mailman and delivery person, so she doesn't bother them.
Anyone else though is fair game! This includes Jehova's witnesses.

I heard a funny story about Jehova's witnesses once. (BTW, nothing against them personally.) This guy had some friends over and they were smoking pot and just hanging out. Some JWs came to his door and when he saw who was out there, he stripped naked then opened his front door, holding a lit joint. He started enthusiastically welcoming them, urging them to come on in! They didn't stop by anymore, after that.

Haha, That is brilliant:ROFLMAO:

Love that first paragraph and last sentence.

I've also heard of folks putting old busted appliance in box that new one came in and leaving it out real visible and it's gone in a day or two.

Well they won't steal my packages nor mail. My packages go to the post office and a special key is needed to get into our buildings. A few times, idiot delivery people left my packages on the stoop, which is street side (so anyone could have walked by and took them), and once right by the door where people come in and out and could have stepped on it. Luckily that package was only a table cloth. So I started having all my packages sent to the P.O.

I'm fortunate that my house is the last one on the street and there are large shrubs about waist high in front of the porch. A person searching for "loot" would have to walk some distance in the street along the front of my house to reach my sidewalk leading to the front door to have a clear view of my porch. I suppose they could drive by but it's a dead-end and they would have to do a u-turn which would slow them down. Most of my neighbors are retired or work from home and not much happens without someone seeing it. Plus I have cameras pointed at my front porch that chime if someone comes up the sidewalk. Never had any packages stolen yet (knock on wood). My mailbox is on the street. So far no problems but if I have some piece of mail I'm concerned about leaving in the box for pickup I will usually just drive by the post office and drop it off there.

I wish thieves didn't target "upper-class homes." Today, they don't care about security systems or cameras.
The house next door to me was rented by an elderly couple. Two guys broke in, beat both occupants & took whatever they wanted.
The couple spent weeks in the hospital. The house is owned by an NBA star & he sold it after that.
The new owners put big security gates in front.

We live in what could be called an "upper class" neighborhood, although the cost of real estate was fairly cheap when we bought our house. A couple of years after we moved here, thieves were kicking in the front doors of homes and stealing whatever they could. We have a very solid, heavy wooden front door but we also had a storm door installed. We figured they would go for the easiest targets first.

Believe it or not, neighborhoods with close to zero crime do exist, but they tend to be in small towns in relatively expensive areas. For most of us moving may not be a realistic choice, but for those that do, the info is out there on the net. Gated communities and condo units with limited accessibility seem to be a better bet. Areavibes.com is a good source on community crime rates, as are several others.

I have an interesting and odd mail related experience. Happened when I lived in an apartment complex. Pre internet. Anyway, I had gone a few days with no mail. Did nt think much. Anyway, one day I went to the mail boxes in my section of biuildings. The mail carrier asked my apt, so he could hand me my mail. I said 324E He came arund to the front of the boxes and said..I got a notification of a change of address for your b=apartment..you neeed to go the Post Office ASAP to look into this.
So, as theoffce was still open, I got back in my car and went to check.
I explained what my mail carrier had said..so the person checked. He came back with a card and said..Here..a change to someone in Long Island NY. He asked me to write down my signature to compare them. Not a match..obviously. He said he woud initiate an investigation with the pos=wers that be. And changed my address back. I never did hear anthing...and since I had no checks or important mail due during the two or three days it was in effect I did not worry. He told me that if any mail got forwarded to Long Island, I should get it back. I didnot get anythng, so I guess I lost nothing
