Watched the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Gardens for the last two nights. Some absolutely BEAUTIFUL looking dogs and some that weren't so beautiful looking, but still nice. Loved that a Shih Tzu won its Class and the Portuguese Waterdog, which the Obama's have, won its Class. A 4 year old Beagle won Best In Show.

Yes, wife and I do love dogs (and tigers).
Looking very forward to when we get our Shih Tzu puppy!

My sister and my niece went to Westminster this year but I don`t think they showed any of their dogs this year-they just went for fun. Sometimes they show their own dogs there and sometimes my niece shows other people`s dogs as she is a professional handler. She first showed at Westminster when she was about 14 as a Junior Handler-she showed my younger sister`s English Cocker.

Funny, I wasn't going to say a word about that! I just hope all the members here understand that YOU are saying this in this thread, NOT ME. LOL

Ok Ill say it, I watch it wait for those fat handlers to fall flat on their face especially the females.(g)

I like dogs and I like women, but I'm not wild about beauty pageants for either.

My thoughts exactly. And as you will see from my sig, I'm much more in favor of people adopting thrown-away puppies/dog, kitties/cats than buying/breeding [ sometimes in godawful situations ].

Dog showing is a whole different story-doesn`t have anything to do with people adopting dogs and people who show dogs do not breed in Godawful conditions. In fact, most of them do very little breeding at all. In the 47 years that my sister has been showing, she has had maybe 6 litters. Only the best of the best of the breed are bred. I don`t care for dog shows because most of the people are so snooty-my sister and niece not included. But I showed Llamas for a bit and it`s the same. Cat showing too. But all of those people are people who care about the animals, care about their breed. My sister lives for her dogs. Too much so,IMO,but she can`t be faulted for that. And she always has rescues around as well-she will take on any dog that is old, infirm or otherwise unadoptable and let it live out it`s remaining years as a pampered pet in her home. And I would love to show you a video of my niece`s three kids with their "brother" "Seven",a rescued Whippet who is as much a family member as they are. Privacy settings prevent me from sharing that but let me just say that he is one lucky dog to have landed where he did!

I had a friend who showed Weimeraners and she was one of those responsible breeders, limited number of litters, picky about bloodlines, etc., and when it turned out that one of her dogs was consistently having pups who had that 'turned-in' eyelid problem, the dog was neutered to prevent future suffering of 'her pups'. But I also watched a BBC documentary about the Crupps show and they showcased one breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels who had a dog that had tested positive for that brain swelling disease that 'Cavies' are at risk for and even knowing what it would do to many of the pups he sired, she continued to breed him. The accolades for him winning Best in Show and the cash was apparently more important than the possibility of his puppies suffering terrible torment., so just because somebody shows their dog competitively, doesn't mean they have integrity.

But, Davey Jones is right.........I was pretty stunned at how heavy some of the ladies and men who were Handlers. Some of them it looked like had a hard time keeping up with their dog when it came to trotting with the dog around the ring for the Judge. Then again, there were some Handlers with dogs who looked very good.

I have no doubts that in dog showing, just as in anything, there are good and bad. I see instances on TV all the time where people who are involved in dog rescue are ,in fact, abusing the animals. But for the most part, you will find people like your Weimeraner friend. The other types don`t get very far before they are found out.
By the way,dog shows are more than just "beauty pageants for dogs." They are about conformation-how closely the dog fits the standard of what that particular breed should be. And the dog must be healthy and not have any visible defects-a turned in eyelid would be an example of that and the dog would be immediately disqualified. Most of them appear "beautiful" because of all the grooming they undergo before being shown.
One last thing....neither my sister or my niece are in any way fat :)
