Do you think that a time will come when humans will be able to live together in harmony?

I have a couple hummingbird feeders. And, you would think the hummingbirds would gather around to share them. But no: There is one who has decided that both belong to him and he spends the entire day guarding them. We're not that much different.

Some day, we'll be able to manufacture food and do so inexpensively so no one will go hungry. Mass transportation will enable everyone to be able to get around. Comfortable housing will be provided. We won't need to work to survive; we'll work to create and innovate. Without competition for scarce resources, humans will "live together in harmony."

That's my vision of life 100 years from now.

Ahh, an old thread with new life. I posted this in December:

Impossible while economic and weaponized political powers still control the world. Even today, large numbers of ordinary less aggressive ethical moral people could live so under different conditions. I certainly could.

Will add that IMO only possible with a much lower world population say 500 million maximum and some kind of global level government like the United Nations that has taken over weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear, biological, chemical while retaining regional levels of local control. With that lower population and benefits of artificial intelligence and advanced science, the Earth could be what other intelligent entities and beings in the universe would consider a paradise. At that level we would be like that reflected in the era of Star Trek fiction where there are no longer any poor, most diseases have been cured, human specific pathogens exterminated, medicine for all is available, people no longer fight over resources and materials or wealth, one has adequate land for those that want some, genetic science has eliminated many genetic effects via nanorobots, damage to Earths life and ecosystems have been repaired, and education is free for all. Sexual, moral, and other conflicts might pragmatically be reduced that could require some level of group isolations with an attitude of "Live and Let Live". For instance those that insist on continually living in some kind of drug daze could live in their own region where they don't bother others. Instead we curious intelligent humans would seek knowledge and enjoyment of our incredibly wonderful blue water world. The fat Ray Kurzweil best seller "The Singularity is Near" I'm currently nearly finished with, discusses many of these science advances, especially medical.

Eventually, when food is manufactured in labs and work is done by robots, and everyone has a place to live along with pleasure generating devices, there will be no more jealousy or competition for resources and people will be able to live in harmony. Those days are probably 100 years in the future, but they will come.
That would give people too much leisure time and, with nothing to do, boredom and frustration would lead to violence.

I see a lot of bickering also from backyard birds. The best is with cardinals. During breeding season I've seen the male actually offering food to females. After breeding season in the winter, I've seen males chase a female away from the feeder.

A 2019 publication from the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere at Stanford University paints a similar picture. According to the MAHB, the world's oil reserves will run out by 2052, natural gas by 2060 and coal by 2090.Nov 11, 2021

The Nation’s Corn Belt Has Lost a Third of Its Topsoil
Researchers used satellite imaging and surface soil color to find out how much of the nutrient-rich earth has eroded away
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/scie...rn-belt-has-lost-third-its-topsoil-180977485/

So with dwindling food supply, losing the oil supply & the inability to operate farm machines on coal seems to me when People ask,What is the population expected to be in 2050?

And the answer is
World population projected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050, and 11.2 billion in 2100. The current world population of 7.6 billion is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to a new United Nations report being launched today.

My reality is if the depletion numbers & the resource depletion numbers, plus population growth are correct. My guess is those pockets of humanity left alive somewhere around 2060 mankind will have to learn to live in harmony.

Malthus was right, and we are proving it. It's sad that we haven't had the wisdom or will to limit population growth. When we went from hunter gatherers to farming, our path was set. That led to civilization which led to better technology which eventually reduced infant deaths and increased our life spans. And yet we still multiply too fast.

I doubt whether we will actually reach 11.2 billion. Starvation, disease and conflict will begin to take their toll before then. It may have already begun. We're pretty clever, but not clever enough to keep increasing in numbers forever.

Sorry to be so negative, but that's how it appears to me.

I don't view your post as negative but more realistic than seeing thru rose colored glasses.

Short Youtube video from President Reagan 2015 UN speech:

Uniting won't do any good.
2 Peter 3:10-12, The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. The heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, the Earth also, the works shall be burned up. The heavens being on fire and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.

"Do you think that a time will come when humans will be able to live together in harmony?"

People can't get along with their neighbors or even their own families. No, I don't see it happening, not in the foreseeable future, certainly not in my lifetime.

I think an off-shoot of this subject is genetic engineering. Should there be control over who is allowed to reproduce? We do it with animals....selecting those with certain traits and breeding out the undesirable ones. It's perfectly possible that this might be done with humans.

No, this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics would definitely not be a good thing...

"Living together in harmony" only happens in songs.

As long as there is someone who wants something that belongs to someone else (be it money, land or mate) and is willing to fight to get it, there will be war.

As long as there is a religious fanatic who believes that his is the only true religion and all others must die, there will be war.

Even if gene editing is possible, it wouldn't help. First off, who is going to decide which genes to edit? What kind of human do you want? Someone smarter? more docile? Maybe different classes of humans?

Secondly, what about all the people who aren't part of this experiment? Do you think they would go along with it? We can't even agree on simple things like birth control, let alone GMO humans.

Eugenics has the same problems, plus the fact that one generation takes about 20 years and there isn't enough time to make any difference.

Didn't mean to quote Gary O.....sorry. Only the topic

Will a time come when we can live together in harmony? I would like to think so, but human nature is our own worst enemy.
First we must use compassion, selflessness, embracing others without judgment, patience, understanding......and the list goes on.
It is going to take some event so monumental that we open our eyes to the idea harmony is the best alternative we have to survive.

Gosh, I've just made myself depressed.
