Over 100m Americans urged to stay indoors over extreme heat and humidity

Britons shared memes about how they struggled to get to sleep overnight amid the hot weather with temperatures not dropping below 20C (68F) in some areas.

The UK will officially be in heatwave conditions today with the mercury set to hit 34C (93F) after highs of 29.5C (85.1F) yesterday and 28.2C (82.8F) on Wednesday.

And the overnight temperatures gave people no respite, as they tweeted that the heat was still 'too much' at 11pm despite having fans on and windows open.

Others were up at 4am because they could not sleep, or had an uncomfortable night before being woken up by 'bird song which sound like screaming'.

The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office have issued a Level Three heat-health alert for London, the East of England and the South East.

Don't they have air conditioning? Well okay, I know everyone doesn't have it.

most people in the UK don't have AC in their homes..only businesses and stores... Up until about 3 years ago..apart from the odd very hot summer. we didn't really get the heat that would warrant the expense of having AC fitted ( and it's verrry expensive because there's little demand for it)... but the last 3 summers here in the East..have been super hot.., and I said to my now estranged husband , a couple of years ago that if we had more hot summers like this we must pay to have AC installed ( we have it in Spain in every room)... and dang the cost... and he agreed, but now we're no longer together since last summer, and I can't afford the expense by myself.. so I have to just have windows open wide, and powerful fans, and really it's still cripplingly hot..and humid...

I didn't realize that! Is it because many of the houses are old? When you say "fitted", do you mean installed in you window? I wonder if a portable AC would be a less expensive option.

I find that when it's really hot, my rooms stay relatively cool when I keep the blinds closed. I have room darkening blinds in the bedrooms and vinyl verticals in the living room. I noticed the other day when the real feel temp was approaching the 90s, I didn't need to use the AC for much of the day. I also actually feel cold, albeit temporarily, when I eat or drink something frozen or icy and always feel warm when I'm using my tablet and computer.

No we don't have those types of windows where AC can be installed, we have double glazing, or triple glazing windows. The house are made from Brick and concrete and need proper AC installed in the walls.. as we have in Spain

Not my house..just an example of the windows..

Would a portable rolling A/C unit be workable for you @hollydolly ? They will keep a room cold.
They just need an outdoor source to vent ... maybe under a door, if you can't use a window ? ... and they don't require heavy lifting.

I keep one stored in my bedroom closet if my A/C unit ever went down.

I use a portable A/C in my bedroom. It works pretty well and is probably more energy efficient than cooling the entire house.

About 10 days ago, the real feel here in northern New Jersey was 103. A couple of days ago it was 100. I have friends in Cali and Las Vegas. Boy do I feel for them these last several days. If it's this hot now, it makes me wonder what the temps will be like in July and August. Keep cool and stay safe everyone!
Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Phoenix and other deserts areas can be beastly in the summer. Much of the rest of CA has a Mediterranean climate, so warm and dry, but rarely super hot. Humidity is usually low and our cool nights are a blessing.

Has this been described as a Heat Dome? I’d never heard the term until last year when we had weeks of unusual very hot & dry early and extreme heat in the middle of the summer. We were hotter than Vegas at one point. The forests dried out and we had massive forest fires.

I asked the o/h about those last year Bonnie, he said it would defeat the object because we'd need to open a window to allow the vent hose out

I have an air purifier which blows out cold air...not officially an air conditioner but it does help to cool things.
I have strong oscillating fans. without which I would have died I think... but it's still baking in here even with all the windows and doors open...

I've been out most of the afternoon... and it was verrry hot, but I didn't feel as hot as when I got back home and within minutes I was drenched through to my skin.. had to have a shower , and change clothes..

Oh, no ... that would for sure defeat the purpose if you had to keep a window open, even a little.

All the portable units come with an adjustable panel that fits tightly in the window frame, and the window closes down on it, so no air escapes outside. The vent hose goes into a hole in the panel.

Maybe a picture is better ..

The panel can stand up too, for windows that are vertical.

we don't have sash windows, that wouldn't work for me.. my windows are double glazed ..one whole pane...

@hollydolly Check this out. You might be able to use a portable air conditioner in your casement windows this way. If nothing else, a portable in your bedroom would at least give you a place to go that's cool and give you some relief, so you can get some sleep. 😴

yes, that would be the only thing I think might work, thanks for that Bella.. I'll have a little think about that, because of course it would mean buying a portable AC first to know the size of the hose..

"Cattle in the Sunflower State are used to coping with heat and humidity. There have been hotter stretches in Kansas, but what made this situation stand out in a detrimental way for the cattle’s health has to do, in part, with the recent rain ahead of the heat wave.

The rain made the pens muddy. Humidity was higher than normal. There was no breeze and temperatures in parts of southwest Kansas spiked well beyond 100 degrees.

Beef expert Corbitt Wall said all of this could have made temperatures in feedlot pens much higher.

“The guys take good care of the cattle. It’s no different than having a bad winter storm, it just happens,” Wall said.

Many were market-ready cattle, weighing in well beyond 1,000 pounds. On top of that, the year overall had been cooler than normal prior to the recent heatwave and the cattle weren’t adjusted to the temperature spike, still shedding winter coats."

Last year we had young birds falling out the trees. They weren’t quite old enough to fly. If they managed to live, there were no streams for them to drink from. People did set out water for them and other animals, though that evaporated quickly. Then the fires started and it got worse.
