Chicago : Shooter on store roof kills six and injures 18

Six people are dead and at least 18 are injured after a shooting at a July 4th parade in the affluent Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

The shooter - who remains at large - is said to have opened fire from the roof of what was an outdoor outfitting store, picking off people in the crowd who at first confused the sound of gunshots with Independence Day fireworks.

He is described as being between 18 and 20 years old and is believed to be wearing a white or a blue t-shirt.

A firearm has been recovered from the scene but it's unclear what kind of weapon was used in the attack.

The shooting began some 20 minutes after the start of the parade. Chicago Sun Times reporter Lynn Sweet was at the parade when gunfire rang out. She has since shared photos and videos from the event which show people lying on the ground, and has described it as a 'bloodbath'.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker says he is aware of the shooting and is monitoring the 'situation'.

There is an ongoing manhunt to find the gunman who is described as a white male with long black hair.

Witnesses described a 'sickening' scene and is it feared that children are among the dead.

'I saw multiple lifeless bodies, people in a pool of blood. It is sickening. If this can happen here in our suburb it can happen anywhere,' he added, a reference to the quiet suburb's low-crime,' witness Miles Zaremski told CNN.

'I have never seen this and I'd hope no American would ever see this. I saw 12 to 24 injuries... I saw a couple of lifeless bodies on the ground.'


Lynn Sweet said there strollers, chairs and flags were abandoned along the parade route and 'frozen in time'.

Debbie Glickman, a Highland Park resident, said she was on a parade float with coworkers and the group was prepared to turn onto the main route when she saw people running away from the area.

'People started saying `There´s a shooter, there´s a shooter, there a shooter"' Glickman told the Associated Press.

'So we just ran. We just ran. It´s like mass chaos down there. I'm so freaked out," she said.

'We can't believe this happened in our little town.'

Highland Park is renowned for being one of Chicago's most affluent suburbs; Michael Jordan owns a mansion in the area, and it is also where enormous mansion featured in Home Alone is

It's not the usual Chicago shooting in Southside where gangs cause constant havoc. This suburb, Highland Park, has a medium income of 150K and medium property value of $585K and is 91% white.

So at this July 4th parade, maybe the shooter got confused and thought he spotted British sympathizers. 🤷‍♂️

It sounds like another AR-15 shooting. The gunman got off more than a dozen rounds in quick succession with a rifle of some sort.

The Williams Lake Stampede B.C. had a shooting yesterday one person shot twice and an innocent bystander shot accidentally. They have arrested the shooter. Both victims were taken to the hospital. Both are expected to live.

You are not alone. I live in a safe area. There are fake ponds with geese and ducks nearby. The trails are only supposed to be used by people who live in the houses, condos and apartments in this area. People are friendly and say hello or ignore you. And yet, I have fear going to walk there.

I live in a so called safe area too but any place can turn unsafe in a minute with what's out there now a days. Sorry to be so bleak.;)

In America 39% of men own a firearm, while 22% of women say the same. The rest of the population do not own a gun. Given that there are more guns than people in US, some people own quite a few, and for some of them, the weapon of choice is a semi automatic sidearm or long gun.

Was it always like this?

For instance, I never worried about being shot at school when I was growing up. People had guns, so I'm curious about the mentality behind the mass shootings rather than gun ownership.

No, it certainly wasn't. As a youngster, the only time I even heard whispers about a gun was during deer hunting season. No one locked their doors at night, kids played in the neighborhood until dusk, safely. No threats of violence, rage, anger at politics ( unless around your own Sunday dinner table with family),no demonstrations in the streets, none of that.
As a nation, we have lost respect for others in so many ways. We have become so frustrated with events, circumstances beyond our control, and mostly have lacked compassion for each other. We have become selfish. And bitter. And incapable of working through difficult times and situations beyond our control.

And none of the above reasons are an excuse for the hatred and violence in our country, or in any other country.
