FDA plan to ban menthol smokes

The most obvious impact the ban on menthol cigarettes will have, is that it is no longer possible to buy menthol cigarettes in the UK.

As the ban is EU wide, you’ll also be unlikely to find menthol cigarettes when travelling to EU countries.

However, as tobacco kills up to half of its users and more than 8 million people a year die globally as a result of direct or second-hand tobacco use, how effective will the ban be in meeting its goal of protecting people from the harmful effects of tobacco?

To answer this question, it is important to note that it is a common misconception that menthol cigarettes are “lighter on the throat” and are therefore in some way healthier7. Research shows that menthol cigarettes can be just as dangerous as normal cigarettes8. So, any reduction in smoking, whether menthol or non-mentholated cigarettes, would be associated with a positive health impact.

Menthol cigarettes have also been linked with greater risks in young smokers. One study reports that young menthol smokers smoke more cigarettes and report their intent to continue smoking in the next year more frequently than non-menthol smokers9.

Another study suggests that young people who smoke menthol cigarettes are thought to be 80% more likely to become life-long smokers than those who smoke regular cigarettes10.

This research suggests that a ban on menthol cigarettes would be likely to be connected with a reduction in smoking. This reduction would be felt especially amongst young people who smoke menthol cigarettes. Reducing both the amount of cigarettes they smoke and decreasing the chance of them becoming life-long smokers.

yes I think they probably did , but the govt shot themselves in the foot, because the young now all Vape.. at a vastly reduced cost and they can have menthol flavour all day long
Over here 'they' got rid of flavored vape products (including menthol) awhile back, I think it was last year.
To further the idiocy though, it only covered vape cartridges- e-juice and disposables haven't been changed.

Are my posts invisible ?
No, you make sure they are not! LOL, one of the things I like about you.

And after this post I went back to your earlier one and did some research. It does appear there maybe some evidence that menthols are easier to start on and harder to quit. I guess that is some rationale, but still the differences are not great. If you allow sale and use of the dangerous non-menthols I don't see that we should treat the possibly slightly more dangerous menthols differently.

Either take the whole thing on and outlaw cigarettes and smoking or leave it alone...

Another study, published by the American Medical Association, reviewed the province of Ontario in Canada’s ban of menthol cigarettes. It found that the ban substantially increased attempts to quit smoking. 29.1% of menthol cigarette users who took part in the study attempted to quit shortly after the ban came into force12.

This provides evidence that a ban on menthol cigarettes could help nudge smokers to quit smoking. This could be similar to the success of other campaigns that promote a break from smoking, such as ‘No smoking Day’13 and ‘Stoptober’14.

I don't smoke at all.. vape or otherwise but my husband has vaped since way back when and he's always mixed his own flavours from reputable sources..

drugs, and alcohol should have come way before cigarettes...
I agree that drugs and alcohol are often problems. However with respect to alcohol our attempt to outlaw it here was an abysmal failure, as is our "War on Drugs". Outlawing these things just seems to lead to a thriving black market funding things like drug cartels.

Outlawing cigarettes would probably go the same way. I know the high taxes has already lead to a cigarette black market, the more we try to restrict them the bigger it will get.

Trying to outlaw vice is a kind of whack a mole game. Not many good track records to point at.

There are good rationales to outlaw high fat and high sugar foods too, doubt we will try that.

Unfortunately I agree with your viewpoint.. the track-record on trying to do away with things has never been good.

I am one year and 2 weeks quit. I never smoked menthol. I still want to smoke but have admitted that this is nothing more than an addiction. I stopped smoking in the house almost 20 years ago. I did not smoke in anyone's home even if they said it was okay. I have respect for others, I do not come before anyone in anything. I will have to face it everyday for the rest of my life. It is hard but every addiction is, I take it one day at a time.

If you still smoke, when you are ready, you will be able to stop. Will it be easy, NO, will you think you are suffering, YES. Can you do it, YES, but you are the only one that can make that decision.

Flavoured cigs were banned about 4 years ago.
I have been a menthol cig person always…..was not a happy camper when this happen.
So….am I really smart or desperate.
You decide…
I got mint/peppermint extract from the grocery store…..using an eye dropper…..just a little dab on the filter…..MAGIC…..menthol cigs.
Still doing it that way.
Like another member mentioned…..vaping grew popular with flavours.

Can't smoke anywhere indoors in the Uk either, workplace, cafe's, bars, cinemas anywhere ..not for many years ... (except people's own homes)... I don't know if smoking is allowed in parks I expect it probably is, because I'd have heard of an outdoor smoking ban
People who don't smoke shouldn't be subjected. At the same time, what to ban or what not to, in general. is difficult to sort. For example, cell phone usage is considered harmful, and many people worry about 5g everywhere, but there is no way to avoid being subjected.

Yeah, I doubt that cancer cells check a persons age or ethnicity before they decide to take up residence.
I'm curious if there has been a study to determine if there is a difference regarding health consequences when comparing those who smoke menthol and those who don't?

Give @MickaC and @Murrmurr time. If and when they decide it needs to be their decision. I have no judgement on anyone that smokes. They are not bad people at all, they are addicts to nicotine just like I am and will always be. I am just choosing not to smoke. Again, let me make it perfectly clear that if my health was in question, I would still be smoking but I would always be considerate of others.

NObody has ever proven that cellphone usage kills people in their millions.. as alcohol & cigarettes do

Scary, for a long time, people didn't have an understanding of those dangers, although some must have suspected. For instance, when you go for an xray, people aren't using protective gear for no reason.

Not exactly the same, but kind of relevant:

One statistical analysis of the new and previous Utah studies showed cell phone users were 5.36 times more likely to get in an accident than undistracted drivers. Other studies have shown the risk is about the same as for drivers with a 0.08 blood-alcohol level.

Note the legal blood alcohol level here is 0.05%, less than the cited 0.08% However cell phone usage while driving is legal.

yes but that's only because they're not concentrating on the road. There was similar figures pre Mobile phone with statistics of people who died from changing Tapes or CD's ...while driving

Yes, there have been several studies and you can find them online. Check to see who funded the study. If it was a tobacco company or affiliate, it's safe to say you can skip those.

Alligatorob has a point. It does make more sense to ban what might affect innocent people in traffic than a personal health risk option, such as smoking menthol cigs.

It's VERY illegal here , has been for years

Since this seemed very racist, I went into the link in the article and found this. This should have been quoted clearly again. Sloppy reporting.
When I read the article's description of the law, it didn't sound like it was directed at black people. It just mentioned that they were more popular among blacks. I like hollydolly's observation that it was media click bate. I find that in headlines all the time.

Does legal or illegal matter anymore?
Banning something They just made an item harder to get or people can improvise like @MickaC.

WHY did FDA approve in first place ? WHY have they been dragging their feet on this while making Snap decisions on other items....

Smoking is a choice ....... quitting is also a choice.... millions spent on ads trying to scare people about health dangers did nothing so now ban something........ funny they do not stop funding the quitting ad campaigns........

My state made such a over the top fuss when they made use of cell phones illegal while driving .........except with hands free devices ........
yet they do no enforcement so law IMO is worthless....

I love being able to talk to people all over the world. I love this board. I love the internet where we can access so much information to help us everyday.

I do though, remember that life was good before all of this. Sitting at home, waiting on that boy to call you for a date. Letters and cards sent between family that were received with great excitement. Cellphones are good, but they have taken over the world. People have forgotten everything that came before, so many are so obessed that they have little time for true connection with their families.
