Anyone here who has had cable, satellite ever gone back to indoor/outdoor antenna ?

I have Direct TV, [satellite] and it has become just too damn costly for what there is to watch .... $140.00 + p/month . And everything on it is old &/or repeats . I mean how many times can a person watch Josey Wales or Red October .... ?

If you have switched back? Just wondering what you have & if you like it/think it was worth the switch ?

I remember saying, in the '80's, that I would never pay for TV! I pay a fortune! I don't think there's any way out of expensive TV, but I would love to hear ideas!

Here in Britain, we have antenna tv. There are over 100 free channels, although we do pay a licence to the government for the privilege of watching. There are a mixture of programmes...several news channels, dramas, music and social, so there should be something to suit everyone.
Those who choose to have satellite tv receive Sky programmes but are able to get the free channels as well.

I just did that on July 1st. For more than year I had the same feelings as @rgp.
When I received notice that July 5th, my bill for internet, cable & phone would go up AGAIN and would be $288/mo (from 208) I had it.

I called to cancel all but the internet, which I pay $74/mo. After much discussion with retention department, I have no local channels, 60 cable channels and phone for $94 per month.

For my local channels, i bought a $29 indoor antenna (small and inobtrusive) installed it (easy) scanned the TV for local channels and I have them all to watch the local news and Jeopardy.
AmazonSmile: TV Antenna for Smart TV 4K HDTV with Amplifier Signal Booster Free Local Channels Support All Television : Everything Else

I am just sorry I did not do this years ago. I don't want the phone, nor the cable channels, but for $20 more per month it's fine. I use the phone line to call my cell when I misplace it.

I have used AirTV for several years with good results.

I have a set of inexpensive rabbit ears from Walmart.

I rescan every so often and now have approx. 40 channels, but I usually watch the same 3 or 4 channels, mostly old television shows from the 70s and 80s that I missed during my working years.

It works for me.

Of course it all depends on where you live, and where the transmission towers are located.
Yup

bought the $40 antennae
pretty much a pain

Shopped cable companies

Ditched Verizon
Hooked up with Spectrum
Now paying 1/3 of what I was
Too many channels....but....I'll bear it

I get cable, Internet and landline for $288.00 per month, that’s not to mention the same package we have in the Florida home, which is half what I pay here in PA. I blame it on the fact that Comcast has no competition in my area here in PA. In Florida, I have six cable companies to choose from. Competition does make a difference.

I get "under the table streaming" now. haha! had "Direct T.V." Kept overcharging me and cutting out the channels I watched. Called them a bazillion times but I couldn't understand a word they said. Apparently, "Oh we are so sorry. the overcharge will be deducted from your next bill." It never was deducted. In fact, higher prices were added.
Both "Dish" and "Direct TV" kept escalating the prices every month.
Now I pay for only my internet connection and my entire T.V. service is free.
Can't get my news channel temporarily though. Used to watch that a lot.
But, "cable satellite" is 376.JPGHORRIBLE!

We're way too far from any transmission towers, so we have to go with cable/satellite, etc. We had Dish for several years, but that was a PITA...every time a storm came through. About 4 years ago, our electric Co-op strung fiber optics thru our area, and we signed up. We now get 200+ crystal clear channels, Internet, and landline phone for not much more than we were paying Dish. We still get junk mail from Dish, and their prices have gone off the chart.

I would like to see a TV service that allowed a choice of channels....we probably never watch more than 15 or 20 of the ones we get.

Wouldn't that be ideal?! good I'm not holding my breath.

I'm strictly antenna TV. It's kind of fun because I never know what channels I will get, reception varies with the weather, time of day, amount of wind, and if the trees are leafed out or bare.

My resistance to pay TV started back when my kids were young, I told them I will never pay for anything that encourages them to sit on the couch, no cable, no game systems, etc.

I only watch a few hours a week even now, I believe in practicing what I preach.

Me, too.

I, too, got rid of Directv. Too much hassle ALL the time.

Paid $19.99 for a Phillips antenna from Target, and never looked back. In fact, I have 2 of them. Picks up numerous channels of my liking.
Also, have Philo for $20 month. Has most of the Directv channels that I watched often, and then some.
Just added HUlu for $6.99. All perfect for me.

So monthly ..... your cost is $27.00 p/month. Then a one time $40.00 purchase of the antennas ?

Sure beats what I am spending ..... I will look into availability here in my area.

I'm able to stream live ABC and other network TV channels using Roku apps. Everything I watch these days is streamed. I'm not sure if they require a cable subscription, though, since I get basic cable through my Comcast package, which is about $120 a month. I might have had to enter a code at one time.

We canceled cable at the end of 2007 and have no regrets. Hated having to renegotiate with them every 6 months (or less) to keep the bill from creeping up (constantly). Finally tired of that and canceled altogether. We have antenna, Amazon Prime but we got that for the 2 day free shipping, it just happened to come with the streaming video option, Netflix, Hulu and our kids got us HBO Max (via Roku). We've been without cable for 15 years now and see no possibility of going back anytime soon. Antenna TV is adding channels all the time. I do understand cable is a necessary evil for some as they have no antenna reception or very poor antenna reception, so they're doing what they must, I'm just thankful we're not forced to continue handing mega bucks over to the cable companies that have no competition in that for a given area, only one cable company is assigned that area, how asinine is that? Anyway, cable free here and loving it! Don...

I would LOVE to stream but I have a weak internet signal and everything I get on internet hits my data package. I'm waiting for Metronet to hit our area (supposed to be soon) and then I can give up the Dishnet. I agree with you Macfan, I have to negotiate with them every 6 months myself!
