Have We Really Dumbed Down This Much?!

@hollydolly said: I know, it constantly amazes me.. I saw on a packet of peanuts recently.. Warning: may contain traces of nuts...

I doubt that many folks are aware of that distinction. It would be useful if it said: "Allergy Warning: Peanuts are legumes, but this product may also contain tree nuts." This would help protect the 40% of people who are allergic to both.

"In the U.S., plain-language labeling on packaged foods is required for 18 different tree nuts. These tree nuts are not the same as peanut (only 40% of children with tree nut allergies have an allergy to peanut),...

I think that anyone with at least average intelligence knows this.. at least here in the UK
I didn't know this. I've never had any allergies (or anyone in my family) and I haven't had any reason to research this. Guess I have sub-par intelligence.

I'm sure it isn't a problem with your intelligence! In fact, I'm not sure that the subject was even discussed in school all those decades ago! So, why aren't they called pea-legumes, instead of pea-nuts! They don't have all that much in common with peas either!

Thank you, Em. ☺️ Actually, I have been trying to remember if I was taught this in school, and I can't remember that it was ever brought up. I don't think there was any curriculum regarding plants at all. Maybe it was just a big city thing. I went to school in Chicago in the 50s.

I have heard that peanuts are legumes of course, but in my response I was actually referring to the part of the post that was in bold type:
"These tree nuts are not the same as peanut (only 40% of children with tree nut allergies have an allergy to peanut),..."

Just a miscommunication with the poster. (I'm taking it as such, anyway.)

I was in Cleveland OH schools in the fifties, but the school actually had a gardening program! BUT, we didn't grow peanuts!

When I went to replace the battery in my smoke detector the other day, I was amused when I saw the warning. Here are more warnings for those whom manufacturers and other entities must think are very stupid customers and patrons. Funny!

Year ago the TV show 20/20 did a segment on this. Hilarious and disheartening. On item really stood out. A family had been making fishing lures for decades when they got a notice from their insurance provider to recall all of their product and place labels on them sayin "Do not put in your mouth"? There were many others that were equally alarming. I worked in the paint industry when the manf. were told to place a sticker on the side of a 5 gal bucket depicting a baby bent over the bucket with the international slash symbol meaning don't do this. Some time later on some TV show there was a seen of a baby sitting in a 5 gal bucket of water to cool off and the sticker was on the bucket. All the stickers in the world won't fix stupid.

I still can't get over the instructions on Hershey bar wrappers.. I figure if somebody's old enough to eat a candy bar, he/she should know how to open the wrapper without getting injured...

P.S. Sorry if I've said this before!!
Litigation, if you don't write every conceivable warning, chapter & verse, you will end up sued.

Read the warning in the blue box on the red bleach bottle.
