Gift Registries for Kid's Birthdays?

They were talking today about gift registries for kid's birthdays. They have an official online registry of the things they want, then their friends and relatives use that to get them gifts.

Call me old fashioned, but honestly, I never became familiar or thought positively about wedding registries, never mind ones for kids. I think if you want to give someone a gift for any occasion, you should choose it yourself going by what you think is nice, and what they may like.

Registries take out all the personal beauty out of gift giving, IMO. What do you think? Have you ever had your own registry, used one for someone else? What about for a child's birthday...too much or okay??

There are wish lists on Amazon that can be shared. Never used it that way though. My grandkids are across the pond and buying for them has become tough. I've resorted to sending one small gift and a gift certificate. I don't want to send duplicates of something they already have. Usually ask their parents though.

My grandkids are still small (4 and 7) so buying for them is still not impossible, just takes a little discussion with their mom. But when they get a little older, I'll happily do exactly what you've mentioned Ameriscot. Gift certificates are so much easier if you know which store they love to shop in and no more pressure about buying the wrong thing. I saw my own mom do that for her grandchildren for enough years, that I learned that there comes a point where Grandma's taste and the kids, totally diverge.

I remember when I was a kid, on occasion I received a gift from my grandparents. I never asked them for something, but what they gave was from their heart. The couple of items that I still have (one is an old radio) hold special memories because they were gifts from my grandparents and not something I wanted at the time. I doubt that I would still have held onto the gifts all these years if they had just give me the latest toy that I wanted or I had a "gift list" for them to choose from.

The radio that my grandparents gave me still sits on my dresser and I still use it every morning. Every time I turn it on I think of them.

Mine are 4 and 9 and stepgrandson is 18. I give him either BestBuy or Amazon. I usually give the girls a book I know they don't have, and Target gift cards. Gift cards for Target for the parents. Outback gift card for son's birthday. This past xmas we left for Thailand the end of November, so I mailed a check to my son for the whole family to either split up 5 ways or to buy a family gift. They got a wii.

I tend to agree, SB, I have used wedding and baby registries in the past, but it seems to lack the personal touch.

The older my grandchildren get, the harder it is to buy for them, I go with the gift cards too.

I like wedding registries as I know I'm getting the couple exactly what they want.

I agree with all the above.

However, one warning about gift cards. (I assume gift certificates are about the same thing.) I once sent one to my grown granddaughter, and it got lost in the mail. She never received it! There is no way to collect a refund when such a thing happens; it's just like sending cash through the mail. I will never send one of those things again.
