...was curious, had to google "rooster vs hawk" and found an interesting read:

Chickens are ill-equipped to fend off a hawk, but roosters are built to protect the flock. If you don’t already have a rooster and you don’t live in an area that prohibits them, it’s a natural way to safeguard your birds. The males of the species are fierce protectors and can be quite aggressive when it comes to keeping the ladies safe. At the first hint of danger, a rooster makes a high-pitched sound similar to crowing to alert the hens to take cover. He’ll continue causing a ruckus, and the hawk will likely move on to less challenging pastures. niteguard.com

Roosters can be cantankerous, I've seen them chase dogs, even a couple grade school boys.

...but now I have a new found respect for them.

One Christmas Eve years ago, I stayed home till dark to put the chickens in their pen before I went to a family gathering. I was rounding them up and the rooster started attacking me. I fought him off for awhile, then I picked up a stick and threatened him. He came at me again and I hit him right on the neck and killed him. I called Misa and told her about it. "Oh well she said, it's hard finding a good rooster." ( Roosters are quite a bit tougher than hens when it comes time for supper )

We had one we had to keep in a cage all the time it was so mean. Finally we hatched one we named "Goodles", and he lasted about 10 years...he was great and very protective of his harem.

And I learned my lesson about touching ducklings. I was attacked by their mum. I gently hit her with a bag and she finally walked away. Those babies were so adorable; all 12 of them.

When my dog was young, and smaller, hawks and great-horned owls were interested in him. But I watched him like a hawk, and at night I flapped my arms like wings to scare off the owls. They can take an animal that is up to 16 lbs. Now he is 60 lbs and I have to protect the birds from him. He likes to leap into the air and catch them as they fly by.
