Carjackings

They have been happening for a long time but now it seems to be getting a lot worse and more often. Can anyone give tips on how to avoid them and or deal with them?

They say to give the perpetrator what they want in order to not be killed or hurt badly.
 

I sometimes park in remote places, sometime for days. For years I've owned a similar design brake pedal lock to the below product that is on the floor behind my 2007 Forester seat. The newest version has a more robust design at $54. Highly recommended for peace of mind. A carjacker at some large mall parking lot won't choose to look for a person going a car with one of these locks on the brake pedal when almost all other cars don't. The much more common steering wheel locks (like The Club) are far easier to defeat because steering wheels are not hard steel like a brake pedal.

For me the less I drive the lower the risk of an actual carjacking.

I agree with others that about all you can do is be aware of your surroundings and use common sense.

In this area car theft and vandalism are much more common.

Recently there have been a rash of thefts in an upscale neighborhood near me. The thieves look through the kitchen windows of the homes for a key board or similar place to keep keys and break a window to steal the keys and drive a way in the homeowners car.

Few carjack to get the car, it's the occupant that's the prize, either for financial again, or sex. It's pretty much what everybody says- don't make yourself a target, by flashing wealth, keep doors locked and windows up. Be alert, but don't live in fear.

I disagree here [about the car] Many do carjack for the car . If it is a high-end car , that is where the money is . They, [the crooks] can sell , say a $50,000 car for $10,000 quickly [might even have a fence] They know almost no one has that amount of cah on them, and credit cards can be stopped quickly . If you're wearing thousands of dollars in jewerly ..... well that's just asking for it in the world today.
 
I went once to one of those senior safety night seminars put on by the local police . You know the typical, lock your doors, ask for a second floor apt, if moving, etc. Have no bushes blocking the windows , if in a house etc & so-on.

One of the other tips/warnings was ..... do not drive a high end/ expensive car, and if you must ? do so only during the day. Park where you can be seen, and close to your destination. Do not wear expensive jewerly or a fancy watch, carry no excessive cash . All sort of cautions. Yes we are limiting ourselves , in an attempt to protect ourselves. But until we are ready to actually punish criminals ..... and set an example by doing so ..... it will likely get worse.
 
Carjacking happens a lot when you are stopped at an intersection for a light or stop sign. Keep you car doors locked and leave room between the car in front of you and yourself so you can pull around more quickly if you have to get away.

The problem with your idea is......Jackers simply stop cars that are being driven in a parking lot, at low speed. They know the sight of a hand gun will easily get the driver out of the car, and then they drive it off. My advise is simple....Give It Up. its insured, and NOT worth fighting over with a armed person. Walk away, and call your insurance company. JImB.

It isn't the only way cars are hijacked. My suggestion was not meant to cover all possibilities but it does help how to deal with the limited scenario I addressed. I might have added don't leave your keys in the ignition and lock your car but then was not addressing all scenarios. Some are hijacked the way you relate, others the way I wrote, others "bump" the rear of vehicles with a beater car from behind, others look for keys accidentally left in a vehicle or hidden in obvious usual places, and there are no doubt a list of other ways they do so.

I agree , give the car up.. it's insured... however if it's a straightforward car jacking then women tend to fight back, and why ?.. because unlike men, most of their personal belongings are in the car. Handbag, with credit cards, phone , everything there which can wipe them out financially, and usually they have their house keys on the car key ring .. whereas men who get hijacked tend to have their wallets on their person.. and therefore are likely just to lose the car..and nothing more important..

Well ..... As much as I hate to say it ..... perhaps you ladies need to re-think your ways ? I know it sucks but .... we do live in a world where the criminal must be considered .

Maybe someday? we will get back to a time where the the criminal/thug is the bad guy ..... and not a coddled member of society ?

More left-wing anarchists. These people have gone completely out of their minds. Laws mean nothing anymore in most big cities. We are getting really close to an all out civil war. Wow! I guess I got it good as I haven't heard of anything like this happening around here. Anyway, my doors lock automatically when I drive so no one can open them. I have a 2018 Ford Focus. Anyway, I live in Canada where the ownership of guns is really "discouraged" by the government. Oh yes, we have drugs and we have guns but they are illegal unless you are a police officer.

You think so? Well, you are wrong. They don't hijack your car when you are inside. Most hijackers will wait until the driver is either getting into their car or out of their car and then they stick their gun in the driver's face and take the car. Carjackers go for women and older people. Some will try to steal the car while the driver is inside, but if you are in your car and the door is locked and the hijacker sticks his gun in your face, I would imagine you will gladly open the door and hand them the keys.

Hijackers also work together. They box the subject in so he can't pull out and escape. One car in front, one car in back and if necessary, one car on the side. If they want your car, they will get it.

Some quick thinking in that viedo. However .... in no case is a vehicle worth one's life. That said, i think @ some point anger kicks in .... sort of .... oh no you SOB , you ain't taking my car !! Understandable for sure .... but worth it ?
