Texting – how do you really feel about it?

Okay, I’m all for technology. And I know texting has it’s purpose. But sometimes I feel that texting has replaced other forms of communication (email, phone calls, and face-to-face). My niece and nephew (in their 20s) prefer to text, and same with a few friends. I know people who say they hate phone calls, and they never answer so callers have to leave a vm or text them, or email and wait until they check it.

I also think sometimes people text as a way to avoid actually talking, which is weird.

It’s not that I’m against texting, it’s just that I think it should be a supplement not a substitution.

Thoughts?

Texting is handy if you have one little question, shortage of time and/or only want an answer and have no time for the endless chit chat and preamble conversation. I telephone my girls lots but I also will text now and again too and sometimes just to say 'I love you' even if I have nothing new to talk about.

I text, Whatsapp, FB message. My friends and relatives are on 4 continents. Phone calls are not always a great option. Skype is a good option after checking to be sure it's not the middle of the night!

I love texting......text my family and friends all the time, my children are very busy, this way they can answer when they have the time.

If I get a test while driving, I'll pull over and stop or wait until later to read it.

I don't text. Since losing most of the fingers on my left hand I have a hard enough time on my big keyboard typing modified hunt and peck style. I used to type around 80 WPM before power saw met fingers..

I text a quick question; which does not need an urgent reply....it doesn't interrupt anything.
i will not answer the phone unless I know who is calling; I get 3 or 4 spam calls a day.....

I don't enjoy the act of texting, but sometimes it allows me to just state what I need to state quickly without having to chat when I don't have time to chat, or having to listen to lengthy answering machine greetings in order to leave a message.

I don't mind receiving text messages at all.

I might be weird, but, I don't think this is, I am not a big talker on the phone never have been, so, a quick text, especially with someone I rather avoid all together is perfection to the utmost. Some people don't know how to get off the phone once they get on and I really don't care to hear unending gossip or other such annoyances. I rather spend time annoying others on the interweb. :D

Now when I want to talk it's a different thing, pick up the phone why don't ya.

Ewwww! Terrible picture in my mind........ But seriously Jim, you're a perfect candidate for texting! One finger only because the keyboards are so tiny.

The wife and kids text. I have no problem with it, if used properly. I don't since a medical treatment rendered the tips of my fingers numb and I only have a cheap flip phone, more bother than usable. I hate phones but realize that the cell was probably the best invention for a mobil lifestyle in the last 50 years. Keeps me in touch for emergencies. But for one to say that a text doesn't need an answer right away has never watched a group of teens, I think they are texting each other rather than talk. My youngest daughter and husband text each other in the same room.

I've never texted; Guess I don't know how. I suppose if the need was pressing I'd learn. I don't hear well and taking on the phone, especially a cell is not pleasant. My wife usually handles phone calls. I'm not complaining, I get along well with what I do.

Good grief..I've never heard of that..I've known people to do it in the same house ( not me) but the same room, that's astonishing .

I text or whatsapp when I have to I'm not a big texter..I'd rather just make quick call and get an answer straight away then hang about waiting for a reply to a text wondering if they've read it yet....

I did a lot before everyone had cell phones, now not so much unless the person I need to contact is in a meeting and its an emergency, even then people do not respond as quickly. I just do not find it useful then add the silly spell check can cause real problems.

I was as shocked as you when I joking asked her if they were texting each other. Later she told me that because her husband is shy and doesn't feel comfortable in a family dinner situation or a crowded room, he will ask her questions via texting. I now wonder if it doesn't go on more than I first imagined. It does keep your conversation private and eliminate the need to whisper when you want to make a snide remark.

I love texting. It's fast and convienent! I have text (texted?lol) someone who is in the same room, house, whatever.
It's just for fun.

I texted last night, for the first time. My daughter works nights, son is ill. Found it a blessing. For general conversation...think not. Do not know how young people can type so fast, on those tiny keys.

My fear whenever I watched my husband use his circular saw. Sad you experienced it personally Jim. :( I've never sent or received a text in my life, and I don't feel I'm missing out. :D

I feel texting is a bit impersonal. It seems as if society is replacing this. With social media, texting, email, I feel we are losing the human element. I am sure most of you can agree that you've read a text and read it in a different context than what is was meant to deliver. Two people can read the same exact text and take the meaning differently. Not to mention the funny auto-corrects I've sent in the past hahaha
