Said that there were two charge attmpts that they were questioning ..... They know my history, and these were femine products [makeup & some sort of night cream] . To the tune of $140.00 . I verified that I did not make such a purchase , as such the charge will be declined, the card cancelled , and a new one issued .

Yes I will check & double check, but I am pleased that they "caught" it.

Always someone trying to game the system !!! I hate a thief !!

I'm glad it was caught. I had a new card in the mail issued by my credit card a few years ago. I didn't get a phone call. The letter said they had picked up suspicious activity. I'm glad they are diligent. Also I have used my credit card to order something from a foreign country without a problem. They know if a company is legit.

In April I received a text message from the CC company that my card was just used in Pennsylvania to buy $88 in gas at a Sunoco station and they named the city. That is not one of my common purchases, the text came even before I was back in the car. I just had to respond Yes or No. Very comforting.

Edited to add: I did make that purchase

We had a similar incident a few years ago and our CC company called us and asked if we had made purchases in CA, FL, and NY. At that time, we lived in AZ. The charges amounted to over $5,000. The CC company was great. They did whatever they needed to do, cleared our card, and sent us new ones.

A reminder: Make sure your wallets & purses have RFID blocking that blocks scanners. Otherwise, your cards can be read while they're still in your wallet or purse by anyone within a few feet of you. Those scanners are available online for $50.00.
I found that out after getting $700.00 charges I didn't make.

Unfortunately, there are no end of "low lives" that try to live off thief rather than go out and get a real job. I understand that there are plenty "Hiring Now" signs out there. I have seen them. I guess their philosophy is "why work when you can steal?"

We had sold our home in Arizona and were headed back to Florida, 2000 miles. At this point we did not have an address. My wife got a call on her cell phone, they suspect our card had been hacked. They read the list of charges.and some were legitimate and some bogus. They said they would honor the legitimate charges and deal with the bogus. When we got located back in Florida, call them and they would issue a new card. The fortunate thing was that I had another card issued by a different bank, so we were able to buy gas and groceries and continue our trip.

I learned the hard way very early on. I was in my late 20's with a decent job and good credit when I started to receive credit card bills in the mail for accounts that I had never opened. They were primarily accounts with appliance and jewelry stores. Seems a couple of guys somehow got my personal information and started using my identity. They would provide a bank account for backup, then close the account. I never even had the credit cards in my possession, but they were using them.

The FBI eventually had to get involved. It was only because they had a videotape of these guys in a jewelry store that they were able to convict them. They had racked up $50,000 in my name, even buying cars, in the name "Middleman Enterprise". It took years for me to be able to write a check or even renew my driver's license because there was a hold put on any new credit.

These scams were around way before the internet and are now more prevalent because of it. I check every statement I have with any financial account frequently because I have seen what can happen.

Police are looking for a woman who looks nice, smells nice & has really soft skin.

My bank cancels my card when they find something suspicious. Then, I have to wait a week to get a new card.
This has happened three times. Much rather have that than be charged for something I didn't buy.
It’s too bad they don’t just freeze it until they determine if their suspicion is correct. It is amazing how good they are at spotting fraud.

Yeah they first said a week , then said they would expeditie it ?

I use it for groceries mostly ..... maybe I'll lose some weight :)

One should probably always keep a little stash of cash somewhere (just in case)

I do keep a "stash" but ....... that means i must actually go into the store, and walk aound 'shopping' . Very difficult & painful ...... I'l just eat what I have till I receive the new card. Or, eat 'carry-out' that I have cash for.

There are scammers out there pretending to be from a credit card company trying to entice you into giving your credit card number so you have to be careful.

This is just why I don't have a CC.
Credit card companies stand behind false purchases; it doesn’t cost you anything except to watch your statement or react appropriately like the OP did. I also doubt that a scammer would get your CC number out of you.

In the past I moved around a lot and didn't have a problem. Until I went to China, and they put a block on my credit card. I had to borrow from my traveling companions, very embarrassing. I phoned and told them to never do that again. It's one reason why I now have cards from 2 different banks.

Why didn't you tell me that 55 years ago? I would have had more free time! This information is no good for me now! ;)

Deb, That is like saying I do not have a car because there are car crashes.
I don't fly because of plane crashes and I am not the one in the pilot's seat. But in a car, I have some control. If someone steals your identity, it is such a haassle to rectify the problem. Look at all the identity theft recovery companies around. My parents had an early credit card and they worrried so much about it, they eventually cut it up (literally) and lectured me long and often on the ills of credit.

Deb,Your parents were from a different generation and their attitudes showed that. Your father's comment that everything has value should have been tempered with everything has value only if someone else is willing to pay for it. You found that out in your endless garage sales.
