What half-broken appliances do you have?

We have a dishwasher that serves more as a drying rack since we basically wash the dishes before using the 25 minute quick cycle. If we use the normal wash on dirty dishes, they do not get clean. But it has lasted 3 times longer than our previous 2 dishwashers so we are sticking with it.

Our frig leaks water out the front produced from the defrost cycle. A pad of paper towels under the vegetable drawer, rung out daily, takes care of it. When it gets colder I will put all the food out on the porch and frozen items in coolers and defrost the whole thing - I suspect a drain is frozen shut.

Our giant ancient deep freeze in the basement requires a bungee and a strategically placed bin to keep the lid tightly closed. I think I would have to cut the thing in pieces to remove it! It still works well otherwise.

Stove top, one burner is not working or should I say working too well. It will not turn off. The darn thing has to be turned off and on at the breaker box. No big deal to get a new one. I just don't like to shop and to have workers for the installation for a new one in the house. I live alone, don't like strangers in my home. Lucky I have a plumber that I have used for years. They don't make me nervous.

Finding an appliance today, that lasts more than a couple of years beyond the warranty can be a real challenge. We've got a big old Montgomery Wards chest freezer in the basement that we bought in the 1970's...and it still works. Everything else has been replaced....some twice...in the past 20 years.

You are probably correct on the refrigerator "defrost" problem....99% probability that the drain hose has plugged up with ice. If you can move the fridge forward easily, you might remove the rear lower access panel, and check that the drain hose is still directed into the drain pan, and put a cup of warm water into the freezer while watching to see that it drains properly.

Also, if the defrost water is showing up in the "fridge" area, there is a possibility that the drain hose has come loose, or developed a crack,

At first I was going to say "none." Then I realized my standards aren't too high, as long as the thing works.

- Knob on the fan broke off, so I have to turn it on with a knife.

- Chain rusted and came unattached from toilet flapper, so I fixed it with a twist tie.

- Gasket coming off the fridge big time. I held it together with duct tape for a year, then did a proper job with Krazy Glue.

- Plastic tab broke off dust receptacle of vacuum cleaner, so I pry it open with spoon or fork handle. Some features don't work. Attachments are missing.

- Bottom drawer of stove will not slide in properly.

- Flap on one of the baseboard heaters will not close.

- Beaters on hand mixer hit each other. I should throw it out.

- Stand mixer is missing parts, but I make it work.

- Impossible to find charcoal filters for kitchen fan, so I'll rig something up out of air purifier filters.

That's all I can think of for now!

56 Year old waffle iron with missing temperature control. I set it on high with pliers and leave it alone.

Refrigerator compressor of indeterminate age makes loud bang when it cycles off. The ice maker works but has corroded where water comes in the back. Light just went out on inside and I found replacing bulb did not fix it this time. Guess it is 30 or so years old. Time for a new one if I can work up the energy to confront delivery, haul off, etc. in the boonies. ;)

Is it 'half broken' if I have to turn the bread so it gets toasted evenly? It's a Cuisinart. It still works and I don't know what brand of new toaster I should buy.

Our washing machine skips the wringing and pump out cycle every now and again, select the cycle again and then it will wring out and pump out.

Nothing.. anything that breaks gets immediately repaired or thrown out...
Same here.

The issue for me is that I have individual cookers (?) that are in near-perfect condition but I just don't use them....InstantPot, counter-top grill (George Forman grill), NutriBullet and probably others that I have stowed away. I'll wind up giving them away at some point.

10 year old dishwasher still works, but the plastic coating on the rack is coming off in places. Will be replaced in the next few months.
15 years old central air conditioner,...want to replace it before it breaks again. Will replace with a more efficient model, plus have heat pump capability which hopefully will lessen expensive propane use.

Another toaster here. I keep it because it still works on half of each side lol, and the outside is cool touch feature. Priced new toasters with similar or same settings, etc. and I think I will just turn the bread/waffle. Works for me.
