Cutting Toenails

Do you still cut your toenails or have them done professionally ?
I was able to take care of them myself until I got the thumb chopped off. Can't hold scissors any more.

My nails grow so fast and at $40 for a pedicure I need to find another way.
Is it cheaper to go to Chiropodist or Podiatrist. Will they just cut nails or does there have to be another problem?

Chiropodist ..at least here are much more expensive than a Podiatrist.. altho' some people would argue they're one and the same, but I believe the former are usually more qualified.

Chiropodists definitely will see to any and all foot problems... so if you need just nails doing they'll do that.. but they'll also check for any other foot problems..

Might be an idea to have your feet seen by a chiropodist once a year and a podiatrist the other times...

I cut my own toe-nails..incidentally..

I get a pedicure about every 6 weeks....$28 plus tip.
I would think in your case, medicare would pay for a trim with a Podiatrist...When I was going to a Podiatrist I saw several getting their toenails trimmed. I have ingrown toenails that can develop into big problems if I don't stay on it, I've found a girl that is very good to work with.

Our health system does not cover podiatrist or chiropodist but $28 does sound reasonable.
I paid $40 plus tip one month ago for a pedicure but they do need clipped now.

I cut my toenails and keep them on the short side. When they become too long, I use long toenail clippers. I also have a board smaller than a ruler, on it I tape emery boards to file my nails down without having to reach so far over. Then because I am overweight, I hold my breath and reach over real far, then use the digger end of a nail file to get the stuff out from the undersides of my nails. When I have held my breath for twenty seconds or so, I will sit up and breathe for a minute or so before continuing on. At the end I will put iodine on my toes, my toes feel so good, I have ten happy toes. I am curious though to see if someone here chews their toenails off and uses a brush and paint to clean them up.

I do both, the pedicure and/or the podiatrist...depending on my money situation.
Insurance covers the podiatrist, for my ingrown toenails and the pedicure is $28 plus tip.

The pedicure comes w/a leg and foot massage. She'll use hot stones too.
I sometimes have her wax my eyebrows too when they've gotten out of control.

Speaking of toenail problems, the toe next to my left big toe has a really thick nail, I think from rubbing on the inside of the shoe. I can barely cut it, it's a quarter of an inch thick. Been that way for years, I'd like the whole nail to be yanked off and start over, or whatever will fix it permanently.

Can't you soak it to soften it up, then cut it? Use some pruners or something..☺️

An alternative to a pedicure is to hire someone from a nursing company that specializes in care for diabetics. You can usually find someone through a seniors’ home. I used to pay someone to cut my mother’s nails.

I detest pedicures.

My husband has ten toes like Nathan. When DH reaches the point when he can’t do it himself, I’ll be hiring that person from the nursing agency to come do them. He doesn’t know this yet.

Yes I have used those but my right thumb is missing and I can't get pressure with weak left so need another pair of hands to do the job.:D

Nathan, get some tea tree oil and rub some into the nail every day.
It takes a few weeks but you will eventually see the new growth is normal toenail. (y)
My right foot big toe nail was so hard and yellow but with that treatment it is now normal.

thought it was called a dremmel (spelling?)
Yes, you are right....but the dremel is used (I think) mostly for woodworking or other crafts, so it has different instruments on the end.

I first bought a battery-operated nail tool, but it did not have the power of the plug-in. It took forever to accomplish anything.
