Cutting Toenails

Lacking the use of a thumb a rotary grinding set would probably be a solution since holding one can be done using the remaining fingers to press the tool against your palm.

podiatrist toenail clippers

There is a podiatrist in our village who provides foot checks for Diabetics and who will come to the house if necessary. My husband does his own using little spring-loaded clippers I bought for him from Amazon; I actually bought pairs for Mum and myself too and we have used them for quite a while but lately both of us have found it more and more difficult so I rang the clinic and made the first appointment, and now she comes to us once a month and checks my feet (Type 2 diabetic) and my Mum's and cuts and files our nails. She does a great job, takes her about 45 mins in total for two of us, and we pay ÂŁ20 each (about $22), which is really good and as I said, we see her once a month. Our feet are healthy and we know that any issues will be spotted before they become a potential problem.

@Mizmo I really hope you can find a solution because nails that are too long cause awful pain so I sympathise 🤗

Speaking of toenail problems, the toe next to my left big toe has a really thick nail, I think from rubbing on the inside of the shoe. I can barely cut it, it's a quarter of an inch thick. Been that way for years, I'd like the whole nail to be yanked off and start over, or whatever will fix it permanently.
Nathan, get some tea tree oil and rub some into the nail every day.
It takes a few weeks but you will eventually see the new growth is normal toenail. (y)
My right foot big toe nail was so hard and yellow but with that treatment it is now normal.

Nathan, my mother was in her 80s when her doctor recommended she remove her toenail. It never grew back. She was fuming because she thought his reason for talking her into it was wrong (I don't recall his reason but I remember thinking he was just wanting a reason to charge for an extra procedure) and my mother missed having her toenail. So first I would go with Mizmo's suggestion to rub Tea Tree Oil on it everyday and wait a few weeks for the new growth to come.

Thanks for all suggestions but none of them would work for me.
The thumbless right hand is not strong as there is nerve damage in digit finger. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not.
The palm has a scar from the stump right up to finger and it has a sharp ridge on it so not much I can do with that hand at all
I can type now with the three good fingers but still mousing mostly with my left. Getting pretty good at it too....

Now I gotta get off this machine as I had injection yesterday for macular in right eye. Not at all comfy.
Always sumthin Eh! ( canuck talk)

For years because I'm somewhat obsessive & can't follow sage advice very well, have suffered with ingrown toenails on both left & right big toes. Finally I decided on surgery to remove both. One of the smartest things I've done. A few months of discomfort later, it was the right thing to do. Who looks at an old man with weird toes anyway? Not sure how it came out with my medicare but I do remember making an $80 copay.

I have used Tree Tea oil in the past, will give it a try! (y)

Do you still cut your toenails or have them done professionally ?
Do my own, never considered getting them done professionally. Maybe men don't.
Why do older people have difficulty trimming toenails?
For me its a combination of the toenails getting thicker and my feet harder to reach.

I may soon have to buy some farrier's tools to get them trimmed.

Once my knees heal reaching them should be easier, hope so anyway. I did cut them just before surgery in anticipation of it being a while before I could reach them again.

Years ago, my brother-in-law told me that because his toenails are so thick .. he uses an actual file (work tool) on them!
Years ago when I first discussed my thickened toenail with my doctor, I [half jokingly] mentioned using a Dremel grinder on it, he thought that was a good idea, I really didn't.
But yea, regularly filing off the top surface with a medium hand file might be a solution.

An alternative to a pedicure is to hire someone from a nursing company that specializes in care for diabetics. You can usually find someone through a seniors’ home. I used to pay someone to cut my mother’s nails.

I detest pedicures.

My husband has ten toes like Nathan. When DH reaches the point when he can’t do it himself, I’ll be hiring that person from the nursing agency to come do them. He doesn’t know this yet.
Here in Ontario OHIP pays for seniors (who have a letter from their Doctor ) to get foot care done. I go to a clinic at Women's College Hospital every 3 months, where they scan my OHIP card through their computer and that is it. No cost to me. JimB.

Did you dilute the tea tree. The bottle says it must be diluted 20:1. Life brand.

I'm there
My left big toe has a nail approaching a half inch thick
I use a rather large industrial side cutter.... considering pruners
It became loose (from a long ago injury)
Got fed up, yanked it off
Little pain, but felt soooooo good
Two weeks later, the thing grows back....thicker

I don't see that tool being of use but there are small versions for nail care availalbe. I have psoriasis, that can cause thick nails. Thicker nails on toes can lead to ingrown toenails. I have a small battery operated nail care kit. I can apply the grinder and keep my nails in check. You might ask the Mrs. Gary to look for one that would help. It is also helpful with manicures for her.

Yeah, she avoids my toenails like the plague
Takes care of my slivers, stitches, haircuts, back scratches
Everything else.....I'm on my own
Stop it! you know she would take care of your feet. That is what we do. Tell me that you did not come home after a hard day. Shower done, you are laying on the couch. She would come and sit with your feet in her lap. She would give you the greatest foot massage!!

Welp I tried to cut my toe nails just now, got 2 done, then yep I cut the skin instead of the nail!!! so now i've got little drips of red all over the place !!!! ;)
