For the last few mornings around 6:30 am you can find BuckBuckBuck and Gray (my cats all have their color as names) canoodling on the deck rail. BBB sidles up to Gray and puffs up his chest giving a couple of mighty crows, while Gray pretends she's not impressed...love is strange...gotta get that roo a couple of feathered girlfriends.

What an adorable pair, and you can see that they really like each other, too ! Animals do have a strange way of taking up with different animals, and accepting them into their "family".
My llama used to stroll around with the goats, and he was their protector . When my milk goat had her kid, I am sure that Gilligan thought he was the father. He sniffed the baby when she brought it out into the sun, and then he literally strutted around that mother and baby like he was the proudest daddy ever. It was the cutest thing to see those two, and Mrs. Goat seemed to think it was ok if Gilligan watched over them.

Heard this morning about a pet emu, female, that has taken a shine to the farmer's bull. She tries to mate with him and follows him everywhere. She won't allow him to do his duty either and chases off the cows.

The farmer has a fertility problem and has had to introduce other bulls to the paddock.

He can always adopt . . .

This is Silvie, who passed on nearly two years ago, with Deckster the ferret. Deckster appeared one evening from under our deck, hence his name. I really had no idea what a ferret was, and when he stuck his head out, I thought he was a rat. He ended up winning the ferret lottery when he found a home with us.

He had the run of the house for a couple of hours in the evening and believed he was one of the Gangstas. When the doorbell would ring, he always ran to the door with the dogs. I had to be sure the doggie door panel was put in the back door when he was out or he would slip out.

The first time this happened was on a cold winter night. I forgot about the doggie door and soon realized Deckster was gone. Hubby and I searched the yard, high and low calling him, and even got in the car and drove around the back of the house and down the street searching for him with a flashlight. We were pretty sad when we finally gave the hunt up and returned to the house, sure we would never see him again.

About 2:00 a.m. I was awakened by a cold, but none the worse for wear ferret sitting on my chest chattering up a storm as if he were telling me about his great adventure. I told him he should have come home before the bars closed!

Never in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought about owning a ferret, but he sure brought a lot of smiles to our faces. If you were having a bad day all you had to do was look at his happy face and devilish antics and you couldn't help but smile.

Nice pictures, Ozarkgal!!! Yup, you'll need some feathered companions for the rooster!!! :D Love the ferret story; was this when you lived in the Ozarks?? Never realized there were ferrets here, but never had given it any thought before, either.....

Great stories; goodness, isn't it true that animals can be more compassionate than humans, sometimes!!

Wonderful story and photo Ozarkgal! Anne, animals can be more compassionate ALL of the time, IMHO. :)

TWH..I don't know about other ferrets, Deckster was my first and last ferret, and I have heard that some can be nippy and unfriendly. Anyone that came into contact with Deckster had their perceptions of ferrets changed. He was a real sweetie and never once offered to bite, even when I gave him baths. I tried to teach him to swim in the pool, no dice, but he liked riding around on the big floaty chair, and would walk on a harness and leash. Ferrets are notorious for stealing small objects and hiding them. He once stole a bag of Hershey kisses, and I didn't find it until we moved. It was under the dining room hutch...sans the candy of course.

Anne..Ferrets aren't native, they are sold in pet stores and are supplied primarily by one major breeder in the United States. http://marshallferrets.com/marshall-baby-ferrets They are tattooed to designate where they came from, and this is where Deckster was born.
I found out that Deckster was turned loose by our white trash neighbors down the block when they got tired of him. I swore the person that told me this to secrecy that I had him as I was not about to return him to their grubby hands if they came knocking.

We lived in Texas then. In some localities ferrets are considered exotic animals and are banned by city ordinance..why I can't think since I don't see much difference in having a guinea pig or ferret.

Ferrets are highly predisposed to adrenal disease and tumors. Because of this their life span is generally about 4 years on the average. Deckster was no exception and began developing the disease at about three, he was only a baby when he came to us, as he had not even developed his mask yet. Finally, at about four years old he was humanely euthanized, and I have his ashes along with all the previous Gangstas.
