Eight Billion People on Earth as of Today

According to the BBC Radio News, the 8 Billionth child was born today,
Many more and we won't have enough water, or food, or anything, air
might become scarce too.

Mike.

8 Billionth since when ? How many folks have died in that same time frame ?

So if it's a problem ? What's the solution ? Kill off some of the existing ? How many & who ? Sterilization ? Again, how many & who ?

The UN says population will peak at 10.9 billion. Others say about 9.7 billion by 2064. Populations are actually declining in some countries; all the projected growth is in Africa.

The "cure" for population growth is a higher standard of living. If people don't feel like they need large numbers of children to support them in their old age, then they won't have so many children. So that would be an argument for massive aid to sub-Saharan Africa, with the caveat that many African governments are hopelessly autocratic and corrupt, so that aid distribution becomes highly problematic.

Exactly my friend. :giggle:

I believe over population is the single biggest problem we face. It is the root of most of our environmental and many other problems. Long term I don't believe a population of 8 billion or 10 billion are sustainable. The sustainable number is probably 1 billion or less...

That's true, but where are the resources going to come from to provide that higher standard of living? We'd have to double the world's energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, with all the associated problems.
No need to kill off the growing population. Earths resources will dwindle soon enough & natural population attrition will occur.
Yep, it will be dwindling resources, disease, war or some combination but its inevitable. And it will not be pretty.

No, I don't see killing off or sterilization working. Not something we could bring ourselves to do, and that is for the best.

As to the solution, I have no idea, it will most likely be wait and let nature take its course. I doubt we have either the wisdom or will to do anything else... Hopefully the next generation will be smarter about this than we were.

Optimism vs. pessimism. Up until now, the optimists have (mostly) been right. But I see your point, we may have reached a point of no return.

The uncure for population growth, strike down Roe vs Wade (not meant to be a political statement, just saying more babies coming soon 😂)

There are many science credible searchable web articles on Earth overpopulation of humans, endless growth and development, excessive depletion of resources, and the harm to the rest of our fragile likely rare within the vast universe, precious blue water world. The real issue is we live in a world with many geographically independent nations, with a range of societal, cultural, religious, moral, ethical beliefs, goals, and histories that cannot individually or as partial groups, have adequate net global affects to reverse the situation.

Currently that shows most obviously in the planet's imminent fossil fuel global warming climate change disaster. Economic powers of Wall Street and their powerful worldwide allies that have pushed back on these narratives, spew just as many confusing arguments denying such and in fact for political reasons have infiltrated control of many supposed environmental organizations. For example, a common argument is the real issue is that most of the damage is in being done by the few powerful nations that consume most. Ironically, such complex diversionary arguments that change the subject are pushed by those most guilty of what results since they understand most of their audience is too stupid, ignorant, confused, and bored to see the big picture and instead affect people to consider their short term needs and desires of their personal lives.

How do I expect this will end? Well, lets hope that is not nuclear war poisoning the whole planet and its life for generations. More likely frustrated by an intractable recalcitrant situation, some secret survivalist group will eventually beyond when this senior is still breathing, CRISPR design a worldwide virus plague much worse than COVID-19.

Disease is top of my list, but I doubt it will be a designer bug.

Just imagine what would have happened had HIV been as communicable as COVID. 99% of us would now be gone. Only a matter of time...

this was in that web site.

Other sources estimate that we will run out of fossil fuels much earlier – for example, oil deposits will be gone by 2052.

We do not just have to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and switch to green energy because we run out of supplies, but also because coal and oil are harming our environment badly.

By that prediction those in their early 50's will witness what is being discussed in this thread.

Unless the huge farm machinery use by Agri farmers like these
& the trucks used to transport food can be made to run on coal or solar the food supply will be the 1st. to go.

I don't fear death & am grateful to have lived a life filled with all that is good. I'd hate to be in my late 40's or early 50's & not be aware of what the future looks like.

Nope! A nation‘s fertility rate (births per woman) must be above 2.1 to support population growth. The developed world — North America, Western Europe, and East Asia are all well below that number. So where is world population growth coming from? The less developed world. In our case pouring across our southern border — With or without Roe, NOT from the wombs of our women. Don‘t believe it? See for yourself …
