Remember these ice trays ?

I recently tossed a couple of them that I had at least since the 60s and replaced them with large silicone ones. Reason: I kept cutting or bruising my fingers pulling the lever up. Up until that time they were great!

I love those old metal trays. When I finally got fed up with the stupid plastic ones I had, and the new, expensive silicone ones I tried, I started looking into it and heard not to buy the new metal ones, to try to find old ones at thrift shops or yard sales. Couldn't find any in those places but did find this one on eBay for a reasonable price and I love it:

As you can see, it's a little dented on the right side but works just fine, so much better than the darn plastic ones that abso. refused to eject the cubes no matter what I did.

I’ve known and used those metallic trays with icebreaker handles. My mother had an ice cube tray of hard plastic that required warm water to be run over it if flexing or thumping it alone wouldn’t pop the cubes out. Not everyone would refill the tray after use, so sometimes you’d go for ice, and only find two cubes in it!

With my last refrigerator purchase, I sprang for one with a built-in ice maker. A more costly purchase, but one I’m glad I made!

We used to have the metal trays long time ago. I have plastic ones now and like them. I have no problem getting ice out of the ones I bought. I just fill them up high with water 💦 and twist them to get the ice out.

I had some flimsy plastic trays a long time ago that were horrible and couldn't get the ice out mostly. I threw them out.

One word of caution about the ice maker type fridge.......The hose that supplies the water needs to be cleaned at least once a year with a germicide , otherwise mold can grow in it, making you sick. JimB.

We don't use much ice so when I have company I make ice with filtered water and store it in a ziplock.
I do the same thing. The icemaker still works but the well water corroded the water connection in the back and floods the floor so I pour filtered water into the ice maker and let it do its thing.

I like our plastic trays, a quick twist and the ice cubes come out easily. We seem to use a lot.
What brand do you have? I've tried several of the plastic and silicone ones and no matter how much twisting, can only get about 2 cubes at the most to come out. The other cubes will only come out by running water on them for a long time and then that melts away some of the cubes.

Sure, I remember metal ice cube trays. Now I use these and love them. No fuss, no muss! 🙂🙃🙂
